Ingredient in glue pest

09/06/2009 1:36 PM

Dear all

I have problem in my pest which we are using to pest cartons. one pest we are using for hand pesting is becoming black after some time may be water is not coming out because of lamination on carton. But the pest we are using from pidilite on machine those carton dont have such a problem. is it because of ingredient in pest. may be pidilite pest having volatile material and hand gum pest having water which creating problem.

Thank you.

Same here Mate, thanks for that. Slaps head with palm of my hand. I wanted to paste from lynlynch but pasting can be kind of a pest and goes black very quickly, most of the time.

Never been to Kenya so it could be an accent thing, never mind, Kiwis can be a funny lot as well, Ky.

Use hot glue (heatpest?) I know you might have a problem with supply were you are but I think you would be better off with this kind of adhesion. That's what I would use for cartons any way. Good luck, Ky.

hi sandeep,

apparently, you are using 2 types of paste (glue) in 2 processes (machine and hand) on the same material (carton).

the blackening you are observing in hand glued cartons can be from the dirt and dust in the area where the glue is applied, or it can also be due to handling after the glue was applied, among other things. did this blackening happen only recently? if so, try to find out what changes were made in the work area, in the glue, in the process, etc. you might be able to pinpoint where the problem is coming from.

if the blackening has been observed for a long time already, and you're saying the other paste from the machine has no blackening problem, maybe you should be consistent and use the same paste for the hand process.

HTH!

First time coming across pest control for pest(read paste) control.

If the hand paste is home made starch or protein based, it is likely that the blackening is because of fungal growth, especially in a hot and humid situation. Adding a small amount of fungicide or copper oxychloride to the paste usually solves this.

Great answer biorami.

Humidity if uncontrolled is a major contributor, as well.

Please see the entry for stachybotris in the following:

(I realize you are not talking about concrete... but this is very informative site on mold.)

Sandeep,

I would like to correct your spelling. It should be paste and your pest confuses the total issue. The brownish hand pasting glue should be a natural resin gum like gum Arabic or gum acacia or plant exudate's. This natural resinous pastes get blackish because of reductive bacterial decay and even offer foul smell. The tannin or phenolic residues present also may become blackish due to oxidation and the result being hardening of the glue. The U.V rays present in day light can also catalyse the hardening.

The best way to handle glues is to keep the lids closed.

You can use PVA based glues like PIDILITE which are solvent resin admixtures . Care needs to be given not to keep the paste containers in open air. As solvent evaporates the paste will harden itself.

Organic glues have limited shelf life and you may try preservatives like Sodium Benzoate to improve life.

Or-prepare then and there with PVA globules and use. Plenty of ready paste gums have come in the market.

Thank you sir

what do you mean by brounish hand?

I think that fungicide or copper oxychloride will solve the problem.

If your hand glue is having alcoholic spirit odour and looks brownish it should be rosin based or phenol formaldehyde based. These resin will harden on exposure to light and air and gets oxidized and harden, which is an inherent property of such resins.

The simplest way id to keep the lid closed, use opaque black containers to avoid light exposure. This also prevent the solvent evaporation.

The other remedy is to add antioxidants like small amounts of chlorinated solvents like Di chloro ethylene, TCE, CCl4 etc, which will inhibit oxidation of resin and hardening.

Make an effective choice.

Sandeep,

To help you better on the decision making part to identify the nature of the hand glue you are using please check with the following.

Take pure water in glass tumblers.

1] Add few drops of the hand glue and mix it to water present in the glass.

*If the gum readily solublizes or dissolves well it is an indication that it is of natural water solubletype. The preservatives suggested should work. Such bacterial decay and loss of viscosity are factual and can not be totally avoided.

*iF the gum disperses with turbidity and smells like almond it could be rosin based glue in solvent. Keep it air tight and use back non transparent containers. Even avoid using iron/ metal rods for handling. You may add minor quantities of chlorinated solvents suggested to avoid hardening.

* If he glue floats with globules formation, it could be Phenol Formaldehyde based resin in solvent . Check for spirit odours. Here again same close and light proof care with small amounts of chlorinated solvents should work.

* One more simple check list is add drops of glue on white paper, subject it to open air sunlight and observe and report behaviour. It could be a simple common sense proof to verify the suggestions.

Regards.

"You can use PVA based glues like PIDILITE which are solvent resin admixtures"

this is what I basically meant in Post #5. OP should observe consistency in using glue / paste material in their 2 processes (manual & machine) since it is being applied to the same material, i.e., carton.

GA, anyway.

Re: Ingredient in glue pest

PVA means two interlinked organic glue base thickeners.

1]Poly Vinyl Acetate- this is the basic ingredient of white adhesive pastes.Like the one you are using for machine glue.

2] Poly Vinyl Alcohol- Urea like globules which on addition to warm /hot water yields transparent jelly like glue, which can also be used as a water soluble adhesive.

1] Ploy Vinyl Acetate pastes are readily available from vast manufacturers and the resin mixed products are a bit costly but are superior adhesives.

2] Poly Vinyl Alcohol globules are readily available in various temperature grades like PVA-G17,117,170 etc,. the higher the suffix number more temperature is required for glue conversion. The usual concentration is around 12% powder for 100 ml of warm / hot water.

You may try out your choice based on adhesion strength required.
