2002 Volvo V70 - Airbag Warning

09/13/2009 3:43 AM

Hi Whilst cleaning out the car the other day, I must have poked a sensor or something under the seat, because every time you start the car the display will only read "SRS airbag service urgent". Does anybody know how to reset the airbag computer? I have done it for the "Service urgent" one before, but am stumped by this one. It is a 2002 Volvo V70 (2.4 D) Cheers

The only way to find out what is the problem with your air bag systems is to use a scan tool that will access the SRS module.

A scan is the best way to find out why the light is on, but years of experience with Volvo's tells me that you might have gotten the contacts dirty or disturbed by your cleaning. If you used any type of liquid it will cause the contacts that rotate with the steering wheel to change resistance and that will set the light. I have seen them correct themselves with a few days of driving, but if the situation doesn't do that you will need to scan the system to find out why your computer is unhappy!

Hi all.

It may be a seat belt pre-tensor issue. I've had this before in my Peugeot.

Cheers

That is what I was thinking. The only thing is the seatbelt is completley encased inside the pillar (except at the top where it comes out), so I couldn't have hit it

I think that you have damaged the wiring to the seat switch(es), or the switch(es) themselves......take a good look and repair that first.

Some cars leave that all "hanging" around under the seat.......bad build policy if true.

Hi

It sounds like you may have accidentally pulled out or dislodged the seat belt pre-tensioner wire (normally yellow and plugs in to the underside of the seat belt anchor) - look at the seat on the other side of the car as systems are normally sym op

hope that helps

This is a common problem on the Vauxhall Vectra I drive. Disturbing the wiring loom to the seat or even sometimes moving the seat can break the connection momentarily. If the ignition is switched on when in this condition it throws an error which must be reset using the appropriate tool or software.

To reset the airbag warning, could I just remove the car's battery overnight?

I doubt if that would work but no harm in trying. I guess it depends on how long the ECU retains codes wothout power & if the fault still exists.

I don't think there is a fault, just a sensor got disturbed. Do you think there would be a battery similar to a CMOS battery in computers? I read somewhere that if you open the fuse box, and short certain points for n seconds, it rectifies it, but that sounds a bit risky to me.

I wouldn't short anything.

I know some cars supply a shorting link in the fuse box which is used for some diagnostic tests but I don't know if Volvo's do this.

It's worth signing up to one of the owners forums & asking the question there, someone is bound to have had the problem before.
