Heat-Resistant Clear Plastic

09/16/2009 5:48 AM

What would be the best type of plastic sheeting to use as a viewing panel on a vessel for a liquid that runs at about 85-100 degrees C and a pH of 4-7, but during a wash cycle up to pH13?

The plastic sheets our stores have been supplying crack fairly quickly.

plastic?, thats quite a Ph span and the temperature it's at, its active. I do not believe that there is a polymer that can handle that.

how about tempered glass.

I recommend it be laminated safety glass. In a view port if tempered shattered the fluid would come pouring out.

two sheets of glass with plastic laminate between them. Car windshields are and example. There are others which have been developed for the fenestration industry for use in hurricane areas. Type of glass and laminate material change with use.

I should point out that the product in the vessel consists of animal protein, fat, and water. We use Sulphuric acid to lower the pH to aid separation of the fat and water. The high Ph is due to the wwashing cycle at the end of the day.

The viewing port has a lot of holes drilled in it as it is long and narrow. (1 metre x 100mm.) So laminated glass might not be the option. We did use some type of plastic a few years back which lasted a long time, but I cant remember what it was. I think our stores people just ordered some cheap perspex.

They use polysulfone in the production of membranes for Reverse Osmosis and Ultrafiltration units.

Ph range during wash cycles had to be kept at 2 and at 12 if I remember the temperature had to be kept under 150 degrees F. That was for the membranes integrity

good luck,

PEEK, Poly Ether Ether Ketone will hold up for ~ 1K hrs under the conditions described. You could also use a thermal setting material such as bismalimide, however, you will need to fully imidize the polymer, which can turn rather dark.

I used to work where they produced printed circuit process machines and we used clear PVC as view ports. They were mounted horizontally over the process chambers. They were 2 1/2 x 4 feet roughly by 3/8 thick.

Full spray contact with the 120-150 F fluid inside kept the lid bowed upward due to thermal expansion of the inside at a higher rate than outside, where the operators were. They would sometimes run 24/7 except for maintenance.

Give it a look. We used tons of it.

One you might try is polysulfone. It is very good with acids and works with some organics. Doesn't work with benzene or other aeromatics.

From the right sources (suggest try different sources on internet) it is good to about 120 C.

It is yellow but can be transparent yellow.

Polycarbonates can easily handle these conditions. Polysulfones have much higher thermal characteristics, but have a slight amber tint.

Yes PC is a good material as long as the service temp is less than 120 deg C. otherwise, it would creep.

dip a fiber-optic probe in there and see if it shows you all you need to view. If so, it will be safer and can be replaced without shutting down the process.

Go for high temperature resistant, good quality glass of 10 mm or more thickness, attch it with proper beeding to the vessel body as a fixed part or a hinged door.

There must be dozens of suppliers of vessel sight glasses across the globe. A Google search will provide names, addresses and telephone numbers by way of which a proper enquiry may be made.
