Is graphite dust 1-4 micron particle size a potential dust explosion hazard?

Any dust or fine powder has the potential for explosion. So to answer your question...YES. BOOM.

But there is usually a greater potential for a fireball.

The appropriate European regulations are:

  • 94/9/EEC as subsequently amended.
  • 1999/92/EC as subsequently amended.

Check out www.europa.eu

The regulations for internal combustions engines in such atmospheres are: BS EN 1834:2000 series (these may have been updated). Check the BSi website.

Fixed installations in Europe should meet the DSEAR Regulations.

Companies such as SIRA or TRL Compliance can give you greater detail on your specific requirements. NOTE: These are UK companies. You haven't said where you are based, you may have to do a local search for Notified Bodies and Competent Bodies (legislative designations).

Finely divided fuel in contact with air? Yes, it is. Pulverised coal has similar properties, for example.
