Pay internet

09/23/2009 12:03 PM

Remember when you could get TV and radio free? You now have to pay to get TV and some radio. There are now sites that you have to pay to view. They switched to digital TV and now we have Sirius an XM and they are trying to get digital HD radio. If that happens, they will have the ability to charge the public for radio broadcasts. We now pay for the internet service, but I wonder when they will get around to charging to view internet content.

"but I wonder when they will get around to charging to view internet content."

I suppose the question I would present, would be who is they??

If it is whoever is placing the code on the interwebs, it is their intellectual property, and (If they have payd for their digital realestate) can charge if they so desire... (the porn industry is a prime example)

However if the They, is some type of "Big Brother" government system... then thats a big negative raptorman.

Digital HD Radio is still operating on standard radio technology and will always be free, as long as you purchase the reciever capable of decoding the signals.

I pay 30 bucks a month for screaming fast mobile 4G internet I can take anywhere I go (in the Metro Area), I use that Internet connection to watch all my TV, Movies(legally of course), listen to internet radio, and visit my favorite digital playground for the mind... Paying for the service provider to provide me with a reliable internet connection seems reasonable to me... The content, (only in my opinion, as i'm no lawyer) can really only be regulated to FCC guidlines, otherwise it's the creater/publisher of the information which regulates it.

Who may I ask do you get the service from? Fast wireless @ $30 a month sounds good.

I wouldn't worry too much. To date, very few (again outside the adult industry) have managed to significantly succeed at charging for exclusively online content. If companies think that traditional website ad revenue is paltry, just wait until they try a fee-based system to view their usually mundane content. The clicks will stop coming overnight.

The only way it might work (and it's a long-shot even then) is if such a fee is only a fraction of a cent to perhaps a cent per page view. This has long been floated but has never met with much enthusiasm.

And as for Sirius XM, if you'll check you'll find that they're not doing too well at the moment. NASDAQ has just threatened them with delisting because their stock has been so low for so long. It always seemed to me to be a bad idea - too expensive for too little content which also isn't particuarly portable or playable on demand.

Pay, as long as its a matter of choice. I'm more concerned when they are thinking of taxing its use.
