Shoe Rubber

09/25/2009 11:44 AM

OK so here is my dilemma. I have purchased a new pair of rubber soled shoes and the rubber smells so strongly I can hardly stand it. Does anyone know if there is a way to treat the rubber to make the smell less strong without damaging the integrity of the compound.

Wear them out a while... soon the smell of rubber will be gone, and unfortunately will be replaced with the smell of feet.

I bought a hand truck(imported) and the tires were toxic. They emitted a foul smelling odor that filled the small shed it was in. It may be some toxic plasticizer/chemical they used in the rubber. Leave them in the sun for a week and see if that helps.

Good luck.

I can hardly stand it

If you have already purchased it, you will have to stand (on) it.

Now, use it for some time, you will get used to the smell and will not notice it after a while.. It is already prooved. Do you smell your socks now? No!, because.. you are used to the smell.

True, others will be always get alerted that you are coming

Rub them with freshly ground coffee, or set them in a tray of freshly ground coffee, and set them out in the sun for a day or two. Even a few hours will help.

It's only on the soles! Unless they were white to begin with, I don't see a problem. I was referring to dry, freshly ground, unused coffee, not wet coffee grounds.

A few years back, I bought an almost-new car. Unfortunately, the previous owner was clearly a smoker, and the car smelled strongly of cigarette smoke. The dealer cleaned it up quite a bit, so I bought it, but it still smelled bad. Quite by accident, I left a 2 lb bag of whole coffee beans in the car for a couple of hot days without using the car. After that, all I could smell was coffee, and I like that smell. After a while, the coffee smell went away, but the cigarette odor never returned...

I have since learned that coffee is a fairly well-known natural deodorant.

On the other hand, I tend to agree with several others that the existence of the strong rubber odor may well be an indicator of chemicals that shouldn't be there! If the coffee doesn't fix the problem, then it might be wise not to wear the shoes.

Were they made in China? If so, I think the problem goes deep into the material. Some of the synthetics that are coming out of China is so poorly composed that they reek of what is probably carcinogenic toxins. Take them back and complain. I wouldn't wear them on my feet as you may be exposing yourself to some bad stuff.

Use cotton terry socks and provide extra inner soles. After returning home, wash your shoes daily and drain dry fee from water. Wash your foot with soap after removal of shoes and wash your socks with soap on a daily basis and dry well to avoid damping smell. Rubber shoes can be used only on areas of requirement and not to be used for permanent wear.

Rub a little Cedar Oil on them.. It will neutralize the Toxin, and you will think you are walking in the woods. :o)

Go to the local dog park and tread in the dog droppings for 20 mins!

Then you wont notice the original stench anymore!

I would be extremely cautious of anything that I wore that had such a strong odor! The best course of action would be to return them to the place where you bought them and complain that wearing the shoes constitutes a health hazard. "Rubber", whether natural or thermoplastic, should NOT have any strong odor. If the store gives you any grief, contact your local health agency or TV station.
