Help finding a Mass Air Flow Sensor

10/11/2009 2:14 AM

Hello, I'm working on a project and I need to use a mass air flow sensor for feedback control. I need a reliable sensor to use that is relatively small. The tubing is about a quarter of an inch diameter. The maximum voltage needs to be 14.5-15 volts DC, it could be 5 volts as well. Any help??? Thanks!

Consider using fast response thermistors.

A differential pressure instrument connected to a the two ports of a pitot tube placed in the airstream will provide the velocity. Multiply by the duct area and the density of the air at whatever the absolute pressure of the air is at any moment to obtain mass flowrate.

I honestly don't know what 'mass air flow' means but never the less...Try the medical respiratory therapy industry. Their machines require accurate air flow measurements. Maybe even consider purchasing some outmoded unit which could provide you with read out values. I think too that you will ultimately be using a doppler based device. Carlos

For a true air mass flow meter try using one of the Honeywell thermal mass flow sensors.

I've used them for decades and they are cheap, reliable and easy to use.

For higher accuracies look at the Sensiron series of mass flow sensors, they are digitally calibrated and have a digital output...

But remember that any accuracies stated by sensor manufacturers are only as good as the measuring equipment used to calibrate them, so maximum accuracy should be limited to +/- 1% at best over a limited range say 10 to 100%...
