what does this sentence mean?

10/13/2009 9:17 PM

Hi Friends,

One of our clients give us a comment on the wind turbine he bought from us, he told me that,

"A kog was broken in the small gearbox that turns the
turbine, so the yaw shaft stopped in one position
while the motor still ran."

I'm not sure what is the "kog", there seems no such a word in the dictionary.

Hope somebody can help me ! I'm sorry but it's really urgent to me!

Thank you very much!

B/Rgds.

Definitions of cog on the Web:

  • roll steel ingots
  • a subordinate who performs an important but routine function; "he was a small cog in a large machine"
  • join pieces of wood with cogs
  • tooth on the rim of gear wheel

Hi Friends,

Thank you for all your help! I have guessed the same meaning as you offered but just was not sure.

I should have known that the "k" in the front of an English word is usually same as "c" and "k" is offen used in German words.

So the client mistook "cog" as "kog".

Thank you very much!

B/Rgds.

If he told you this in writing, he misspelled the word.

If he told you orally, you misspelled the word.

The correct word sounds exactly the same, and appears in dictionaries.

There is a gear box on a wind turbine and I believe he is saying that the gear got stripped and the output shaft stopped while the wind turbine blades kept turning with the wind. The blades ot the turbine do not turn at syncronous speed required for generation so a gearbox is required to match the system speed.
