Projects for Undergraduate EE Students

10/22/2009 4:40 AM

Hi,

I'm going to start my final year projects early next year. I am electrical engineering students an looking for a renewable power generation. Does anyone has any idea for a renewable energy? Hope to hear from you soon!

Thanks!

It would be sensible to make it relevant to your location, wind, wave, tidal, solar, geothermal.
Depends where you are really..the Sahara desert tidal generation scheme is rather short of backers.

Given that there seem to be an endless supply of engineeering students asking for someone else to do their creative thinking for them perhaps the renewable energy source is at hand for all to see.

Why not you try a project by combining solar and wind power. But it depend where you stay.Need to do solar/wind mapping first.

Regards.

There is a lot of work being done in solar and wind but very little with small scale hydro. Run of river hydro has great potential. Every river and stream with moving water could be producing hydro almost from the source to the mouth of the river without having to build dams. Rivers run 24/7 365 days a year. Once you install it you know what the output will be not like wind and solar where you are dependant on the wind or the amount of sun shine.

If you do a search you will find home built run of river but no one has taken it and tried to put a package together or done feasibility studies on the potential of a river or the potential of a province or country.

Another idea is solid urban waste recycling by classification and then burning the organics, which would sterilize the organic material and also provide energy for the facility.

For the first case you need to team up with at least one Chemical Engineering student. In the second case you need someone from Mechanical Engineering. The ideal would be three students, one of each background.

I would share my suggestion with you yet as I am sure all members are aware any post becomes the property of this site and as not to have the world aware of (Dirt Cheap Energy) I would say "Stop playing with fire you silly cave man!" there are lots of other equally mesmerizing things out there.

Build an electric vehicle with a solar powered charging station.

First a bit of philosophy: Forget the "pie in the sky" stuff that may get rave reviews and little else from your academic associates and teachers.

Design something real like a product that people will buy or actually build and that will get you a job.

A couple of my ideas:

1. Design a system of solar panels and air conditioning hardware that can charge a battery while the car is sitting all day in the sun and then run off the battery to cool down the inside of a car so it is cool when the driver is ready to drive the car. Some period of time before the driver arrives at the vehicle he would make a cell phone call to the car and initiate a remotely programmable cooling cycle. This would be an aftermarket item designed to be easily mounted on a variety of production cars and trucks that do not have air conditioning systems installed by the OEM. This system would have to be shock, vibration ,weather and theft resistant and require minimal modifications to the vehicle on which it is installed.

2. Design a system that could be sold in the aftermarket as a vehicle accessory that would use thermoelectric devices to both heat and cool just the seat of a vehicle when someone is sitting in it (of any chair for that matter) adjustable by the user to achieve satisfactory comfort levels. Solar and batteries are just one possible power source for this system. (please advise us here when such a product as this is actually available for sale)

I am thinking of hundreds of tiny hamster wheels each tied to a tiny generator. Feed the little buggars on sunflower seeds which can be economicaly grown. Instant renewable energy!

... and don't forget the hamster-poo which can be used as organic fertilizer!

This theme is indirectly refers to renewable energy adsorption in a different way. Solar rays are consisting useful INFRA RED RAYS, RADIO FREQUENCY AND MICRO WAVES. These are useful clean energy radiations.

Your project can aim at absorbers of these useful radiations on a selective basis from solar radiations[Factors like wave length, frequency etc] and convertibility for clean energy applications. Being in an engineering Institution you can avail multi disciplinary consultations like Physics, electronics, electrical etc. It is worth doing as electrical engineers. Don"t bother about foolishness and proceed for the learning process
