Brushless DC Motor Distributor (Regen Controller)

11/02/2009 4:37 PM

Hi everyone,

I have been googling my index finger off, and I cannot seem to find a decent source of industrial-type dc motors that are brushless. I am looking for something in the .9-1.5kw range. I'd need a distributor who sells to individuals. The motor size would need to be comparable to something used on those little recreational scooters. Trouble with those is that they don't sell decent brushless motors.

Also I'd like someone who's familiar with regen. braking controllers to send me a message either on the thread or privately...I want to learn about building controllers for the next e-bike project I put together...and it'd be nice if I could put together a Current Throttle with Regen controller.

If you go to www.globalspec.com, do a search for dc motors then search by specification (.9 - 1.5kw, brushless) about 20 companies will come up in the results.

You can further narrow your search from there.

NOT local, but see if these guys have something close to what you want...

Also take a look at this site for "ideas and info" on plug-and-play vehicles...

http://www.goldenmotor.com/ Great site! Thanks!

I've been designing a scooter-type vehicle to use for hunting (getting deer, pigs, etc. out of the woods), and this may be the ticket! I wanted something compact, and these motors are about as compact as one could hope for.

GA!

Here is a link to HobbyKing which has some powerful motors and controllers for the money.

My brother an his son bought one of their motors and appropriate controller and put it on a small scooter, and it works pretty well.

Aren't RC motors a little small to provide the torque needed for a bike? I will look more to see what the ratings are though...

Some are rated at 6500 W with Kv = 170 (volts per 1000 rpm). 1 HP = 746 W (100% eff.)

that's ok you just do not look at the right place. you will find all your answer in companies that offers motors for radio-controled airplanes, boats, heli and cars. you will be flabergasted by the level of hitech they have! some companies have motor in the 15k range! a lot of them are in the .3-1k range, divided in 2 types: inrunners and outrunners. inrunners are the regular type like conventionnal motors. they run faster and some of them has an average rotationnal speed of 3 000 rpm/volt, that means that supplied with 9.6 v, they run at near 30 000 rpm. and that is average! some of them has 5600 rpm/volts and more! they are suited for as you can understand for high speed stuff. if you need torque instead of speed, then your choice should go to outrunners. they operate at regular speed around 800 to 1200 rpm/volt and offer high torque in the 10%-80% in there exploitable voltage range. they are now the most trendy and hype! both types offer super efficientcy, more then 85% in most case. In some of the most recognized companies you have KONTRONIK http://www.kontronikusa.com and AVEOX www.aveox.com mostly for insane inrunners and for outrunners your choice should go to AXI http://www.modelmotors.cz a tchecoslovakian company that make incredible reliable products! they even make a double motor, meaning 2 motor sinc inline that operate at 235rpm/v on 10 LiPoly with 57 A current and 91% efficiency! a monster that can turn a 26" x 10" pitch prop at 12 000 rpm! as a final note, you can check now for other companies on ebay and google, i know guys who has bought on ebay chinese motors that run great and the cost /hp has dropped to a ridiculous level. but like everything else, be careful in doing so! the 3 companies mentionned earlier are in the oldest in that field and are the one used most often by professionnals and champion pilots. some of them has 1/3 scale Extra 300 that hover like an heli on brushless motors at 1/2 throttle and still climb vertical on 3/4 throttle. check Youtube for some of them. there you are

Sorry everyone I realized I forgot to mention that this is for an electric bike. If these RC motors that your all sending me the links to can provide enough torque to drive an ebike please let me know, because as of now I have the notion in my head that they won't.

Thanks

My links are NOT hobby motors. They are SERIOUS EV motors and their cost shows it.

Some hobby motors may surprise you. Up to 2 HP in a tiny package. Problem 1 is the speed is usually well over 10000 RPM, which needs serious reduction, and problem 2 is the duty cycle. You can run one for 5-10 minutes at 1 - 2 HP output, but then you may need to wait 30 minutes for it to stop glowing. Awesome power/weight ratio for R/C hobby applications, but not well suited for a practical EV.

Thanks for your links mjb, I did look at them and those are some impressive motors. When I actually have funds again to do an upgrade I will definitely refer back to what you've posted here. I intend to keep the links to all these threads bookmarked.

The problem with golden motor is that their BLDC options are 2kw-7kw...WAY beyond what is legal in my state for an E-bike. At least beyond what is legal to have on the bike paths! I am limited to 1kw...and I don't think my .9kw motor is actually performing at .9kw...it acts a bit weaker than that...so its probably got some efficiency issues.

There seems to be a gray area about who's rules rule between state and federal ebike requirements. I've seen several places that claim ebike limits are

1) must have pedals

2) under 1 hp motor

3) can't exceed 20 mph on level ground

to avoid the license and registration process.

Be safe and double check before you get selected to support the local donut shops
