Soft Starter Connections to Three-Phase Motors

11/04/2009 7:19 AM

I have a 6-wire Star Delta motor to be connected to a 3 Phase supply through a Solid State Soft Starter. The motor has two leads, one with three wires and another with four wires including a ground. Do I need to know which set of leads is Star and which to Delta? Which set of leads is to be connected to the Soft Starter and which directly to the Line supply as required in the wiring instructions?

Wire the motor to the soft starter unit as though it were configured in delta. In order to keep the motor supply cable the same, these connections need to be done within the starter cubicle and not at the motor terminals.

Yes. Be very careful over which wire is which, otherwise the thing may blow fuses on start-up.

Thanks Mark. I also thought I needed to know which lead was for Star and which for Delta. However, when I asked the motor manufacturer I was told that it did not matter, either lead could be connected to the Soft Starter.

Who is Mark?

Provided the three conductors are at the same end of the windings as the motor operates while it is in delta, and these are connected together at a terminal in the motor cubicle, then yes, it will do. The only other thing to sort out is the direction of rotation, which will require re-assessment at power-up. In the event that the motor spins sdrawkcab, simply swap the connections on any two of the three phases coming out of the soft starter.

Make sure the starter overload protective device is correctly set to the delta full-load-current!

The guy is asking which wire is to be connected in to the VFD he has a six leads motor meaning the tag of his wiring is U1,V1,W1,U2,V2,W2 or in Numbers T1,T2,T3,T4,T5,T6 now his asking you which is delta and which is wye connection First he has to Make the Motor in delta by making it 3 leads meaning he has to make U1and W2 as L1/V1 and U2 as L2 and W1 and V2 as L3 before you can connect it to your VFD if he wants to change the rotation interchange L1 and L2 meaning you have to configure your six leads out Motor into 3 leads out Delta from the motor terminal dont confused the guy any 3 phase motor having 6 or more leads you have to configure in the motor terminal before connecting it to VFD i hope this will help you by the way if you are not Familiar with number Tagging and you want to make a connection in delta or wye just let me know i will help you

your Motor should be connected in delta before you connect to your VFD since that is 6 leads out your connection should be u1 and w2 tied together v1 and u2 tied together and w1 and v2 select which is your L1,L2,L3 or you may need a wye connection according to your Voltage supply in case you use wye connection just tie U1,V1,W1 i hope it may help you. by the way any 3 phase motor you can make it 3 leads out either wye or delta 12 leads u can make it 9,6 or 3 leads out ok
