how to test insulation resistance of genset wiring?

A qualified electrician would use a high voltage insulation test meter.

you can use winding insullation resistance tester such as megger 5000

Pls be sure you have disconnected all the semiconductor connections (Such a AVR) before the megger testing.

Meggers have classes. Better ask the class of suitable megger by getting in touch with the manufacturer.
