Looking for an LED light bulb to replace a 60 Watt Incandescent light bulb

11/14/2009 1:38 PM

I've recently made the switch from incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent light bulbs. I was surprised by the electrical savings, a full 20% or so off my electricity bill every month. Apparently I leave the lights on a lot.

Anyway I was wondering if anyone has come across an LED light bulb that they like. Ultimately LED bulbs are gonna be what we all have, I just don't want to wait the 5 years its gonna take for them to be mainstream.

I'm looking for something with reasonable color temperature (not looking for bluish light) that is relatively bright and dependable. I'm willing to spend some money if the bulb is really good since it will just save me money in the long run. Name brand models (phillips, GE, etc.) are preferred, but I'm open to smaller company brands if they're good.

Anybody have any recommendations?

P.S. Please don't post a google search as a response. I know how to do that. I'm asking people here for their personal experiences and subsequent opinions.

Until the ROI for LED's approaches that of CFL's you're better off just turning the unused lights off.

Even if your power consumption per lamp went from 60w to 6w that 20% figure suggests you have around ten lamps going 12hrs/day @ $0.10/kWh. Reduced air conditioning and refrigerator heat load due to this being fall in the northeast probably play into that 20%.

You're probably right. Still, I hadn't expected it to be as noticeable as it is (even if it was only 5%-10%). The electricity drop was with respect to last September and October and had already factored in at least part of the change due to air conditioning and refrigeration.

I'm not looking to move to LED for cost savings as much as I'm kind of intrigued by them and if there is anything out there that is any good, I'd be psyched to try it.

GE makes a lamp that is ok I guess. I bought one just out of curiosity. It is 9 watts and looks like it has maybe 3, 3 watt LED's. It is intended for use as a spotlight for accenting I guess. I put it in a bell type table lamp fixture and put a piece of 1/32" teflon sheet in front of it. Teflon is a labertian radiator so it diffuses the light and the result is amenable to use as a table lamp. Not sure what the incandescent "equivalence" is, maybe 40 watts. It is guaranteed for 5 years so we'll see how that works out. The 7 year CFL's are a farce. Most of the cheap ones don't necessarily last any longer than an incandescent in my experience. Wonder what the actual energy savings is when you calculate in the amount of extra energy required to manufacture them given their short lifespan?

I'm probably the only one who didn't know that,"An important consequence of Lambert's cosine law is that when such a surface is viewed from any angle, it has the same apparent radiance." From Wiki.

That would make it a Lambertian radiator, I guess.

Cheers.

Thanks for the further discussion. I was wondering if you wanted the LED's because you are dissatisfied by the quality of the illumination(color temp 80%-intensity-15% -expense of bulb 5% by my reckoning). I have tried the CFL's and while I can doo the math, STill find I need several of them o get adequate illumination for most tasks. milo

Really a good advise to all the people on "Economical-use" on their resources.

A tend to buy from "Sales", "Buy one get one free" culture has drained most of the general public resources to a level from where you have to work, work, ... no rest or time for your your loved ones.

And drain of resources which can be avioded with little effort.

Have a nice day, coming X-Mas and New Year Day for you & ALL !!!!!

Fortunately, i have a couple of customers that have an ongoing interest in LED lighting, so I get to test a lot of "new" products entering the market. LED's aren't quite there yet. Color is a minor issue in most cases (there are a number of color options already available), but, generally speaking, the marketing hype about the actual output of these lamps is pretty much overblown. My experience also suggests that it is other components (specifically internal capacitors) that limit the life expectancy of these devices, rather than the LED itself (a cap exploding as a result of a voltage spike is quite exciting!)...

I don't know if it will take five years to reach what I consider a viable product, or more, or less; what is obvious is that what I consider a viable product is not necessarily conincident with what you consider a viable product!

My whole house, and shop is basically lighted with LED in some form or fashion.

The light I am typing with at present is about 3 watts total.

I have actually designed, and converted several flourescent old style fixtures into LED by using these Nichia 21 pc LED/PCB strips, and making sure they are securely heat-sinked.

I just use the proper 120/12vdc adaptor, and these are fully dimmable using cheap reostats.

We are using the 3x1 LED par 16 with standard med screw base that I replaced the par 20, 50 watt halogens with. These are not quite as bright, but because they are 5000 degree Kelvin color temperature, the visual acuity is better, and you can stand with less lumen output.

We also have some of the 5, and 7 watt High Power, 5000 K that are in cans on a tall ceiling that are kinda pricey, but do a great job.

I even use the flexible PCV/LED to light up the trunk in the old LS, works perfect.

Obviously there are many more types and too numerous to mention here.

Hello,

I am designing some lighting for my micro aquaponics system. I am at the bottom of this learning curve. I was wondering if you might have a good website to suggest to help design a lighting system that would produce 5000k-6000k light via LEDs.

Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to provide.

John

Don't like 'em.

Violet/blue spectrum hard on my eyes. Attached red led to soften.....got purple. Attached yellow........got green. Tweaked by applying more current....threw entire thing away.

Good for outside of house with battery charging solar panel and light sensing switch tho.

One word of caution.....leds' are lasers and they can damage the retina.

I presume diode lasers could be considered LEDs, but most LEDs do NOT produce coherent light, and therefore are NOT lasers.

ANY bright light can damage the retina.

There was a very interesting discussion on LED lighting in yesterday's CR4 Electrical Engineering Section. Sounds like there is a long way to go yet before WHITE LEDs are a reliable long-life alternative to Fluorescent lights.

Thanks, I will try one of these. I like that they provide color temperature. I'll write back and tell you all if they work.

Thanks for all the responses.

I replaced all my outside floodlights with LED from Costco. They use 3 or 5 watts instead of 50 each, put out no heat, just white light and are supposed to last maybe 15 times as long. They were $13. Payback was less than a year. Inside I use LED nightlights and some in fixtures for mood lighting. I think CF is a transition technology (aren't they all), and LEDs will be ubiquitous in a few years.

I too have replaced my floodlights with the LED ones from Costco. When I broke the CFL in my mill's work light, I replaced it with one of the 3W floodlights from Costco. I'm quite satisfied with all of them.

I got a letter from Costco/Lights of America offering to take them back, because they couldn't guarantee the lifetime advertised, but I plan on keeping them.

Hopefully the new 60W replacements Phillips is testing will become available soon. I have much more confidence in the low voltage of LEDs than the high voltage required by CFLs. As I have said before, my testing of failed LED traffic lights showed the problem to be bad solder joints, not failed LEDs. I only had red ones available to check.

In snowy regions LED traffic lights become covered in snow and ice and sleet. Conventional ones tend to melt the snow off the lens.
