Finding datasheets on google.

11/18/2009 11:33 PM

Sh!t i hate google when it comes to looking for data sheets. All i get in the first few pages is 'datasheets4U' and 'alldatasheets' etc (you know what i mean) where you have to subscribe or pay a subscription fee before you get to the manufacturers web sites. OK if you know the manufacturer, but if you don't, the data sheets or website can be buried into page 4 or 5 of the search engine. Very easily missed. Very annoying.

Anyone else find this? It was not like this a few years ago.

Yes, I'm with you, V annoying.
I have no idea why those sites exist, I s'pose some idiot must be daft enough to pay for what is in the public domain.
Go to the manufacturers web site, of a distributor (eg Farnell) they will have data sheet links.
If you don't know the manufacturer try National Semiconductor or the other big names.

Also use the resellers (Mouser, Digikey, etc) websites to get the datasheet. They usually link to the manufacturer to facilitate this process. You don't have to go running around all over the place.

Many IC's are discontinued. But these resellers will provide you with an alternative source.

University of Washington makes these data sheets available.

Anyone else find this?

No, every time I have been able to find what I want for free. It may not be at the top of the search list, and sometimes not even on the first search page. Even those really hard to find parts I have at least been able to find the component type and manufacturer off the subscription site in the first search so I can go directly to the manufacturer site or refine my search with a more accurate description and find it using Google in a subsequent search.

What type of component datasheets are you looking for that are causing such trouble?

I agree with you completely, I also don't understand the problems either that the OP has.

Sometimes I have problems for a particular chip because it (first) appears that nobody has even heard of the chip, but thats all.....

Here is a link (for a chip I use) that shows that (on the second screen) there is a download for the manufacturers Data Sheet....Alldata is great!!!! Allegro is also good for its own docs.....

http://www.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-pdf/pdf/176062/ALLEGRO/SLA7078MPR.html

As you also correctly point out, the OEM is usually a good source for free docs...

If the OP mentioned which data sheets he needs, maybe we could help even more?

My message was more general rather than looking for a particular part i can't find. My gripe is google search engine (or any other for that matter)...it was not like this before. When you punch in a part number, before you would get the manufacturers web site at least in the top 3 - regardless if it's discontinued. Now it lists the companies that that want to peddle the part not the data sheet. I refuse to pay for anything that is in the public domain. I just wanted to hear peoples thoughts as to why is this so particularly of recent times.

It's called advertising, presumably those companies pay to have their site come up on the first page of the search.
i know it's a pain but you could always do the advanced search and specify not those sites.

I understand your frustration. Those on top of google search are paying per hit. In fact I am paying google for the same. Every time somebody is using the key word (there are 20 of them that you can use) that I associated my business with, my business data will be posted, together with others for the same word. The one who pays more is set on the top of the search. If you click on my name, I am charged, by google, with the amount that I set. This is America, this is business.

In the statistics section of that google service that I have just mentioned (post #6), I found that there is a daily click on my website from the same IP. Now, the mystery is solved....What did you say your address was?

This has annoyed me for some time, and I get around it by avoiding Google, Bing, or any of the other general purpose search engines. One has GlobalSepc, ICMaster, NTE, DigiKey, Grainger- depinding on what you are looking for. The general purpose search engines are best if your primary interests are HHO, over-unity, or intelligent design...

Avoid the use of the word "datasheet" in your search, and just use the part number. This will often get you to the manufacturer's or a useful website sooner.

Yes it has become more annoying as the years go on, but i found datasheetcatalog.com to be the most user friendly.

I find Google Scholar much more helpful for techncal data and useful studies.

Google Scholar returns academic papers, legal opinions, patents, ppublished studies and technical data. It impresses me much like the Google of yesteryea use to.

Hi daffy,

Is this a general moan or can you tell us what you are trying to find?
