Computer Lobotomy

11/23/2009 10:38 PM

What´s on the title is exactly what a friend told me I should do to my PC when I asked him about trojans. My system runs on Vista and gets automated new virus definition updates every four days or so. It´s set to run full scans every Sunday with Symantic Antivirus. Well, this past Sunday at 10:00 hours the antivirus kicked in and haven´t stop since; it´s been running for 36 hours with the scan window showing trojans being dumped in quarantine at a rate of 3 or 4 per minute. Should I shut the scan down manually or should I let it run its course? I´m scared guys. Please advise.

I would shut it down and take whole thing to a computer shop. They can scan your hard drive externally and remove the problem file without letting it self replicate. Also bring in any thumb drives or external drives that have been connected.

I don't know if malicious code can be planted elsewhere in your computer. Most memory other than hard drive is volatile and does not hold data after shutdown. There is bios on your motherboard which stores data even when shut down, but I don't know if a virus can get there. Best bet is to take whole thing to PC shop and let the pros handle it.

Good luck!

Drew

Yes, the BIOS can be infected with a virus. However, this will also destroy the motherboard, so this cannot be the cause of the problem.

Is your norton antivirus software genuine? Generally you may installed pirated softwares but it wouldnt accept online downloads. Generally we may get the free antivirus for individuals(domestic purpose). if your software is pirated verson, pls uninstall the program and click the following link for free antivirus which iam using and get auotmatic updates as regularly. http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition Also you have some free online scanners & free removal tools from the below websites

http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

http://home.mcafee.com/Downloads/FreeScan.aspx

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Trendmicro is supported for all windows version including windows-7 for 32bit & 64bit processors. Cheers!

I wonder if the OP understands WHY he has so many Trojans.......like when he gets his PC back, how he will need to protect himself in the future.....!!!

You need to update everynight and scan after that update. In addition, unplug the computer and start it again and enter "safe Mode"

this way

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm

Once in safe mode, you again run the antivirus, and then retart and update the virus checker and run again.

safe mode blocks many trojans from running. It is possible that the virus has damaged things, so it will not boor properly, or run at all. .Next go to a computer shop, have them do one of these two things.

1 Install a new hard drive, they are cheap now. remove the old hard drive and put it in an external USB hard drive case, about $25 cost, Then once they have installed the new drive, come home, and reinstall the operating system. Go onto the internet and reinstall your antivirus, and then plug in your old hard drive in the external case and run an antivirus check on it in safe mode.

Once done, start in normal mode, scan again and transfer the data file you need to the new computer.

2 Go to a shop and clone your old drive onto another drive in an external case, then format you old drive and do as above.

Then update daily and scan every night.

From past experience-

1-Disconnect the computer from the internet.

2-Delete Symantic Norton AntiVirus and anything else Norton

3-Install Kaspersky Internet Security 2010

4-Run Kaspersky with the system still off-line to find as much junk as possible and quarantine or eliminate

5-Reconnect to the internet and let Kaspersky link with its home site to download current list of viruses, etc.

6-Go on with you life as before. Kaspersky finds more stuff, faster, and deals with it very effectively better than any other system I have come across. AND it seamlessly updates itself about every 1/2 hours to pick up anything that has hit the net.

If you have more than one computer, it is also available rather cheaply in 3 and 5 machine packages.

ALL of my business and personal machines are running it. An added benefit is that Norton cannot protect systems running 64-bit operating systems like XP Pro 64 (which I have), Vista Pro 64 or the new "7" 64-bit systems.

My opinion: being connected to the Internet all the time is not good. I worry about those who brag "always on." I am connected to the Internet only when I am using it.

Also, the computer is completely turned off every night. I understand it can reset some important things when turned back on each day.

I have heard from several sources that Norton is quite difficult to totally uninstall. I have PCcillin at the moment. Since I have had updating problems, I may switch to something else when the subscription is up next summer; maybe Kaspersky since I have heard good things about it.

Re: Computer Lobotomy

I really like the way people who either love or hate a program will tell everyone else how to choose what is best for them.

I am running Norton 2010 and it operates just as seamlessly as your Kapersky. My mother and Step-Dad have Kapersky and have had issues with it just the same as the OP has had with Norton.

If you really want good information on what is best for you look up the reviews. I did it when I was searching out what I wanted on my computer. When all was said and done everything I needed pointed to Norton. (By the way it was rated in the top 3 over Kapersky in all of them. even made number one in one of them.) It does really depend on the reviewer and the reader.

The best software may be Kapersky for you or it might even be AVG. Who knows. I know I have not been infected while using Norton but got totally screwed by Mcaffe. I am not going to bash Mcaffe but am merely relaying my experience with their software.

The advice given above about letting a computer service tech take care of you problem is a very good suggestion. The only other surefire option is to pop out the old HD and put in a new one and reinstall the OS on it. Have the old one disinfected as stated in yet another post and decide for yourself what protection you would like to install.

Best of Luck,

Jeff

Good points.

The truth is there is not any one A/V that is optimal for every threat.

Kapersky and AVG in my opinion are not as effect as they once were.

Norton and Mcfee are outstanding resource hogs and every year I get a bit of work cleaning up machines employing their software

The best methods are those you never hear about because developers of those programs know advertising attracts unwanted attention.

For me one firewall has proven to be inadequate and I don't surf risky sites.

I would sugest that you do a hard shut down install super anti spyware (http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfile.html?productid=SUPERANTISPYWAREFREE) then install AVG (http://www.avg.com/us-en/download-trial) fallowed up with advanced system care(http://www.iobit.com/advancedwindowscareper.html)

scan your computer with the super antiSpyware the free edition will get rid of any issues you have.

then scan and repair your system with the free version on advanced system care it will fix your errors

then scan with avg it will protect you from now on I would sugest buying the full version of avg

the next thing you need to do is go into your control panel then to programs and features and un install any Symantic software on your system I have found that this program does not protect and has not protected any device i have tried it on

I´m very grateful to all for the the valuable tips. I´m just a humble user that barely knows his way around a computer other than using e mail, word processing and spread sheet calculations. Some suggested downloading free antivirus software, scanning in safe mode and so forth. I´m a little overwhelmed by it all. The bright side is that thanks to your input I now have a few borrowed remarks for the smart guys at the computer store. I ´m rushing there after I finish my coffee. Have a great day and thanks again.

Either shut the Symantec down or log off and restart the PC.The anti-virus may NOT be dumping trogens at all, just stuck.Go to Windows defender and run virus scan.I bet it Norton to blame.

I had a problem like it. I didn't cared to insert a USB drive of my friend & worked on it.

When I opened the PC next day Antivirus [AVG Free Edition] right from boot-up started to scan and never stopped.

One thing I found from the scanning window that in each folder there a file <FolderName>.exe

I searched for & the files were coming up in search & in AV window.

I Force-stopped and re-installed windows after formatting C: during installation.

And took out the drive scanned it by another PC as Ext drive.

Re: Computer Lobotomy

I too have had some recent problems. A few weeks ago I got some kind of virus just surfing the net and screen came up stating that I was infected and to "click here" to down load the anti virus. I found this very suspicious as I was not running that type (I use NOD antivirus) and have had no problems on any of my three computers for over 1 yr since I got it.

Anyway I didn't do as it asked, pressed ctrl alt del and exited through task manager. got everything off forced it to do a virus scan. It said it was OK so then did disk clean up and de-frag. This is were my heart dropped, in the morning when I checked, it said I had NO Hard drive! Then I couldn't start it.... Took it to a computer tech friend and he was able to retrieve the data on the hard drive, when he was re installing he said the Hard drive went for a shit. Anyway I bought a new little bigger one 320 and he did his stuff. Since getting it back it still didn't run like it use to. (BTW it is a Dell Insperon 1525 1 yr old running Vista).

Now Monday I had no internet connection, figure it was a tower issue so I called Tue morning and the said they disconnected my service as the download traffic was excessive and effecting other customers. I say WTF! We weren't even using it! So he says it could be a virus or Pier to Pier? and he reconnected the service.

Last night the Sister in law (super computer geek) got on the machine remotely to check it out and found that we had a Trojan (FlashU1it.exe) I think that's it as I am going from memory. It seemed to be stubborn for her but she seems to have got it as the lap top runs real quick again.

I haven't heard much talk about viruses and Trojans lately. Is this becoming a big thing again?

Yes and it's the holiday's again too.

I too use NOD on a few machines and have had alerts. Next time a screen treats you as such together press alt&F4, do a hard shutdown and reboot to safe mode and allow NOD to run in safe mode, NOD has special provision for safe mode and you may want to do it once in a while too.

BTW NOD has caught everything so far. I have six computers all running different security softwares, since August Norton got hit with a root-kit and I'll replace that motherboard. Trend Micro is toast, a new hard drive too, Zone Alarm has no troubles, F-secure took a hit an required reinstall operating system twice, Avira has no troubles.

Suggest you begin using a hardware firewall in addition to software.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks for the detailed response and PM. I thought NOD was good and what you have said endorses that thought. Everything seems to be good now.

Thanks for the insight and suggestions.
