It would be best for you to create a resume and submit to companies that do the kind of work you are interested in. You may not find a company that requires all the CAD packages you know. Typically the company will be using a basic Autocad© program. Most manufacturing that utilizes machine tools, will most likely use CAD-CAM, something you will have to adjust to. Finding the ideal job may take some time. Meanwhile, keep up on the latest Autocad versions.

Be careful how you present that Machinist/toolmaker experience. It may throw you into the overqualified category. You need basic experience on the job. You are going to be starting from the bottom in a new world. That means you won't designing anything for a while. Most of what you'll do will be creating individual part "drawings" from the layouts or models created by more experienced senior designers. The last thing you'll want to do is try to show off your "how to make it" knowledge to these folks. They tend to be pretty proud and full of themselves; moreso than the wise old journeymen you knew in the shop.

You are going into a world where everyone is expected to produce at 110%. It'll be like working in an incentive shop except the bonus won't be in your paycheck, it'll be the paycheck itself. And there will be a lot of things to learn about how an engineering department works and what an engineering drawing or CAD file has to contain that you never heard about in the machine shop and was just glossed over in your diploma program. But they have to be correct on the drawing or it won't make it through the release process that in a large company can contain dozens nitpickers who have to approve your work or you get to do it over. And all too often these people care little about your deadlihnes, only their own that might get stretched out if they can justify sending the drawings back to your department.

Uptake is low at the moment but your skills have particular value, something will come up. I was just reading an ad in Jobrapido for someone to model an aircraft project, probably not paid but adds to your skill and solution solving cv. Otherwise get the local agencies by searching on Jobrapido for your area.

This may seem trivial but proofread your resume before submitting. You misspelled "Mechanical" & "Opportunity" in your post and while it may not seem like much to you it would be a deal killer for me if I were going through a stack of resumes trying to decide which ones I wanted to interview. I ignored the places you allowed words to run together in your post although in a resume that would be just as bad. For me at least. I do realize a post on a forum is different than a printed resume and sometimes misspelled words and missing spaces get past us because we're not taking the time to proofread our post before hitting send. My 2 cents for what its worth!

We do business with one display company that uses SolidWorks. They design and manufacture retail displays. You might do some research and find some companies like that in your area. I wish you the best of luck in finding what you seek. It is kind of a bad time right now with the economy the way it is to be looking for a job much less that "plum" job we all dream of. But hey! If you don't try than you certainly won't get it. Because I can assure you it won't just drop into your lap.

You might also want to consider getting a professional resume writer to put it together. For less than $100, they can write you a resume that is sure to land you a job, or at least an interview.

Better option would be to get to know on or more of the big three: Unigraphics, Catia or Pro/Engineer. AutoDESK is not considered a viable option if you want a job at a major company.

Problem is major companies are not the ones hiring. They're the ones who have done the most laying off. Think automotive, aerospace, capital equipment and A&E firms.

My son with thousands of hours of Pro-E under his belt had to learn Solidworks to get a job in the new "green" industry sector. These are the only ones hiring in our area. Small companies don't go for the large enterprise CAD systems because they cannot justify investing in the software system features that Pro-E etc. sell.

If our OP has anything left in him to go for more training I'd recommend Mastercam or one of the other CAM softwares and refocus his job hunt on a large machine shop operation that needs a CNC programmer with strong abilities in CAD. He certainly has the fabrication shop background for that. The ability to facilitate the system links between customer and fabrication vendor has a real future in industry.

On the other hand I have also seen growing indications in recent years of a reduction in the number of "draftsman" level jobs as CAD software has made it possible for degreed engineers to take over the drafting and designing work of an entire class of workers known as designers who a few decades ago were the ones who did the "layouts" of designs on the drawing board.

I much doubt that there is a good job future for a CAD draftsman who lacks substantial formal training in engineering or a wide ranging technical experience set in engineering areas related to the industry where he might apply for work. A major driver behind the CAE industry's success has been the cost reductions and time schedule reductions achieved by elimination of the drafting function from product and system development.
