What Kind of Pressure Switch to Use?

12/08/2009 12:13 PM

Problem: 6x6x7 box with air coming into it, need to detect when the box is blocked with debris. Need to set off an alarm or LED when pressure builds inside.

solution: thought of a pressure switch but are to bulky and require direct installation to detect, need to detect in a 3"x6"x7" chamber.

any suggestions?

Only two kinds of people leave a casino, loosers and liers

No, there is a third: those who cannot spell .

(Sorry, kinda bored today)!

Damn you arrogant bastard!

loosers and liers, both wrong. I knew they didn't look right.

I usually spell check this drivel.

OK, I can't spell, but I don't lie.

Cheers!

You might try searching on "diaphragm switch" and see if any of those will work. Check ratings both for actuation pressure and for voltage/current capability.

Orion make a wide range of pressure switches in India.

Assuming the blockage will stop the airflow, you could detect blocked airflow with a heated wire anemometer. This type of detector uses two heated elements, one exposed to the airflow and one shielded from the airflow. If there is airflow, the exposed element is cooler than the shielded one. If there is no airflow, the exposed and shielded elements are the same temperature.

You could remotely use a PCB mount pressure switch to trigger an alarm, there are many types around. The only connection to your box would be a plastic pipe.

Best choice is LL. It is flow sensor. The pressure build up for air media will be much slower than flow sensing.

Pressure in the line will be again based on load demand and the compressor capacity, but not the flow.

C'mon guys, LL deserves a GA and that after so many repetitions of the same information getting them.

Thanks. But, I do not attach as much significance to the awarding of GA's as some do.

I would never stoop to soliciting GA's as some unnamed feline has shamelessly done in the past.

If you put it OT, the feline woul'd see it and then wouldn't go nuts.

No the best choice is a simple large diaphragm pressure switch, this can be tapped into the box by a small tube so the switch can be mounted any where within reason. These are capable of operating on very low pressures. A flow switch would require a complicated mechanism for setting a trip point and constant monitoring to make sure it is not being blocked with the rubbish in the system. A diaphragm switch does not require large amounts of air to cause displacement of its operating mechanism so a filter if required on the inlet tube should be able to handle debris without blockage over a significant amount of time.

Some of these points have been mentioned by other posters.

Thank you all for your comments, I will see if any of these ideas will work.
