Metal Halide Lamp Failure

12/10/2009 3:37 AM

Hi Everyone, I have a problem with GE OM CSI 1000W metal halide lamp in THORN's OQ1000 Fitting

so my problem it, At the site with the same fitting some of the lamps are failing for god knows what reason. What i did i took one of the fitting in which there was a lamp failure replaced with a new lamp (same specs) and the fitting is working fine, i left it open for two days straight and no error such a s lamp failure has occured. so i told the people at the site that there must be an issue with your wiring at the site or excessive voltage is present over there which is causing the lamp to fail. But at the site they have checked another working fitting on the same spot where a lamp failure has occured and the fitting is working fine. so now i am confused what is the reason for the lamp failure, if i supply new lamps at the site and later on they fail too so it will be a waste of time and money . Guys i need help Pleaseeeeee

The failure may be with the voltage fluctuations, check your EB voltage and standby power supply source.

How old are the starters? They are cheaper than the bulbs.

Are vandals beating on the fixtures or throwing rocks at them? Nite lites disturb street people. These bulbs don't like shock.

Are photocells cycling the lites on and off too often?

I couldn't get to the lamp web site without a password. Metal halide lamps can fail prematurely if they are not scrupulously clean when installed. Keep fingers OFF them and if you do get anything on them, clean carefully with alchohol. Over voltage will also contribute to shorter life, as will vibration.

Already some good infos.

1) Further to those good points may I mention that lamp quality is paramount, if you are using lamps from China - beware!!! I would never use anything from that land......

2) Also, are the fittings allowing the lamps to get too hot maybe? (or too hot for poor quality lamps)

A combination of 1) and 2) may give a lamp life in hours instead of months/years!!!!

May I suggest a test of two lamps (at least!) one in a fitting, one not, see which one lasts longest!

"i left it open for two days straight and no error such a s lamp failure has occured" Did you leave the fitting open? It is possible that the failure occurred due to over temperature. In the open condition the lamp probably ran cooler.

I left it open at my warehouse before the same fitting was placed at the site but from the site i took the fitting to my warehouse, placed a new lamp and kept it open for 2 days and it worked fine

U did some good trouble shooting work.

A fitting is used for a lamp, the lamp goes bad.Another lamp is used for thesame fitting and the lamp did not go bad.It is simply the lamps that should be suspected.some lamps will last longer, others(same make) will not last.I hv experience this in so many occassions and found out that u need to be very sure of the quality of the lamps.

If u say it is china make, yes someone can say i dont like made in china products because they are inferior, but its not true all the way.We have very good quality products made in china and they perfor very well. All u need do is make sure that yr lamps are not mixed with good and poor quality as u can nt see this untill u hv powered them.

Pls buy genuine original lamps and safe yr job.

The simple answer is "Don't buy Chinese Lamps". Who wants to waste money and time sorting out good from bad. Buy from a local company, with a guarantee of quality and replacement if found to be low quality.....

You may put more money out per lamp, but the money saved in replacements (and paying someone to do the replacing) will more than make up for the extra money!!

Its a sad case of affairs, but until the Chinese Government starts to take interest in sanctioning bad companies, they must (sadly) all "take the blame!" for a few bad eggs.........

Reading your replies, it is either the fitting (when closed) or the orientation of the fitting that is causing the lamps to fail.

What does the supplier say?

By the way, buying Chinese lamps in the UK is still the same as buying them from China directly.

WHERE WERE THE LAMPS MADE?????? Find out.....

Check the orientation of the mounts. Some bulbs have to be mounted only in one position, it's marked on the packaging.
