Generally speaking a camshaft is something used to convert rotary motion to linear motion and usually at a specific point in the rotation. In 4 stroke internal combustion engines it is sometimes redesigned with different duration, lift, and timing, depending on the rpm range where you want the best torque.

Well if you're going to go into camshaft 2.0, then what about solid, hydraulic, roller, and flat tappett?

GA, Dell!!

Add to Del's terms "overlap" "duration" "timing" and "lift" (thanks, Abdul Rehman (UK)) as well as "clearance" (below the base circle)

There are many excellent websites and reference books which have information on camshafts. Please take advantage of these to find the answers you may need.

If there are specific topics beyond what these provide, that is a major purpose of these forums; unique information beyond the everyday.

Although not intended in their primary designs, camshafts can also be used to impart/imprint personal opinions in elevated street discussions when verbal intercourse has not rendered a suitably orientated conclusion. N.B. Unpleasant side effects with this use!

Yes. Many experiments have been conducted to determine the most effective mode of employment. There is the insertion school of thought and the impact school. The wise practitioner will not join one school or the other, but instead apply the best technique for the situation.

Although in rare cases, words alone can bring a discussion to an appropriate close, a deftly applied camshaft can serve a function in verbal discourse not unlike punctuation marks in written communication.

Any shaft revolves, has one or more cams made or fitted on the shaft which lift orpress any mechanical component to operate.

Veh Engines has two such shafts; one is crank shaft & other timing shaft.

Crank shaft drives cylinders & operates valves while timing shaft operates the electrical cicuit of ignition of spark plugs in synch with cylinders

Sorry !

Some misprinting in my post:

<<<

Veh Engines has two such shafts; one is crank shaft & other timing shaft.

Crank shaft drives cylinders & operates valves while timing shaft operates the electrical cicuit of ignition of spark plugs in synch with cylinders >>>

Correct is:

Veh Engines has two such shafts; one is crank shaft & other Cam-shaft.

Crank shaft drives cylinders & Cam-shaft operates valves and timing is adjusted by the help of its adjustment.

Hello All,

By the way the question has been posed it appears to me to be yet another typical homework question!

Have a great sunny day!

a cam shaft is a shaft which is not perfectly round but has some 'bumps' which can push rods or activate something as it rotates. plain and simple

Cam shaft is a shaft containing 2 or more series of cams. On ICE(internal combustion engine) applications, there is a CAMSHAFT that contains 4 or more cams built on it, depending on the number of valves an engine have.

Cam or camshaft design is so critical that it should have excellent timing since it is transforming Rotational motion from flywheel(attached to Crankshaft) to linear motion on the intake and exhaust valves.

Saying it in the simplest way, it is a simple machine used to transmit rotational kinetic energy to a linear kinetic energy. But i suggest, reading kinematics books for mechanical engineering would further help.
