Bonding Aluminum 7075

01/05/2010 7:07 AM

I am trying to find a braze or soldering compound to join two "hockey pucks" of 7075 aluminum together. The 7075 has a melting point of 1175F, and there are holes in the pucks that need to maintain their integrity, so it needs to be a low temperature. I will be using a small annealing oven as the heating source. I have tried the usual search engines, and found nothing helpful, I am hoping somebody here has some experience in aluminum bonding.

Thanks in advance...

Check out HTS 2000 aluminum brazing.Low temp, high strength brazing.

Why braze, why not glue?

High temperature (150 to 170°C) curing epoxi with residual elasticity would do!

Do not exceed 170°C for more than 2 hours else you will change the temper status of the 7075.

GA as thats exactly what I woould do, after really intimate cleaning and slight roughening of the two surfaces to be glued.

Would Durafix do it? I've used this with a propane torch & it produced a joint as strong as the parts being joined. The braze temp is well below your material limit.

I guess I should have added that antifreeze will be flowing through these, so there can be no leaks. I will be pumping the antifreeze at 20LPM. I haven't found a suitable glue that will handle the temperature change that I put this through. From the cold of Michigan winters to the heat of the summer. Glues that I have found won't handle the temp swings.

Thanks for the replies.

Quality epoxy, check the maker's specs before buying.

This from a recent NASA bulletin;

A truly remarkable, innovative epoxy adhesive, sealant, and protective coating has gained widespread acceptance for service at cryogenic temperatures. Master Bond EP29LPSP not only functions at temperatures as low as 4 degrees K, but also withstands cryogenic shocks (i.e., from room temperature down to liquid helium temperatures in a 5-10 minute time period). Additionally, it meets NASA low-outgassing requirements.

Might be worth checking out their products.

You might think about laser or e-beam welding around the perimeter of these pucks, but why not treat them as you would a pipe flange, and either bolt or clamp them with an O-ring between them?
