Bunk Blower

01/12/2010 5:21 AM

I'm trying to build a bunk blower with a old Harvestor blower that use to blow feed stuff into a bin maybe 20 to 30 foot into this bin. It is run from a tractor pto at 750 rpm. I put a 10 foot piece of flex pipe on the end to try and blow the snow out of the bunk. It will not. Is it, that I got to restrict the inlet end down more to create pressure to get more velocityor restrict the outlet end? We have not got a clean curve of flow out the end as we used a ninety degree pipe from the end as I think that cuts flow also. It is about a 6" to 8" pipe out this blower

Careful if your modify something not for the original intent.

I take it that is a IH blower for silos?

Not familiar with the IH config.

Do you blow it up into the bunk or sideways into the bunk?

Have you thought about using a chopper instead, like a Gehl or something like it, that way you have some control from the outlet. That way you can modify the cutter so its no long chopper but feeds it into that blower.

Or I should asked first about volume you would like.

Orange paint, to old to tell
Want to blow down the center to blow snow out of bunk. As much volume as I can get as some snow is wet and some is dry.

So you moving snow with maybe some old feedstuff

one of your problems

What is the radius of your blower.....too large of a radius, it would require too much horse power....also put a strain on your universals.

Moving the snow into the blower, may also be an issue.

Have you looked at a used 3 point tractor mount snowblower. 85 HP tractor could turn a 72" wide Snowblower

or even one that fit up to a lawn tractor?

No the volume of air would blow the snow out of the bunk and it wouldn't go thru the machine. All we are doing is taking air from the great outdoors and creating wind to clean the long line of feed bunks without having to break our backs and shoveling it out

How about an eductor system using compressed air? Commonly used to move all sorts of materials, simple and dummy-proof if you have compressed air.

You may need a nozzle of some sort at the end of your tube to get your air velocity up as you travel down the bunk. If you haven't already, take a look at the bunk blowers that are sold commercially. That will give you a pretty good idea of what they do. The Harvestor blower may or may not have enough oomph to move the volume of air that you want, so you may have to go a little slower. It's hard to say much without knowing more about what you've got to work with.

Take a look at http://www.swwelding.com/blowhard.htm or google search on bunk blower. Most of them are all constructed the same - large diameter centrifugal blower with the outlet reduced to get the velocity up. Unless your blower is large, you'll still have trouble with wet snow. Feed left in the bunk doesn't help either. I agree from past experience. Scooping bunks sucks.
