Useful reprocessing?...rarely. Safe, economical, practical reprocessing...no. Expensive, but there is currently no better solution than to bury it for millennia the best way we can so that water can't get in and none of the waste leaks out.

Yes.

Many types of material obtained when decommissioning nuclear reactors that originally were considered waste have found new utility:

--Co-60 (from corrosion resistent alloys in high neutron flux) has many uses including as high power gamma sources for imaging.

--Recently Reactor irradiated Halfnium, which is typically used in control rods because of its very large cross section for absorption of thermal neutrons, has been found to be a very dense energy source that releases a significant amount of energy in a controlled way (as gammas i believe) when hit with the right microwave energy. This has renewed research into 'nuclear airplane engines', though i believe calling it 'nuclear' is off base.

--Cesium, rubidium, and other fission products have been found to be highly appropriate house warming gifts for attorneys and tax collectors.

As well reactors are an excellent source for obtaining certain materials like: Plutonium, Tritium, and Deuterium. Have you had yours today? Do you Even know what the RDA is for each of these?

Ship it to North Korea. Nah, cancel that--they have enough problems already.
