What improvements could be made to the user interface?

01/24/2010 9:00 PM

I was in this discussion & started to recount things I think could be better on the CR4 interface.

Here are my thoughts:

I to have had plenty of enjoyable & productive exchanges with mgaulin,

Moose & Chris

I'm in the middle of one of my complaints. I drug mgalin down from your post & my font has been hijacked.

Everything has become a link

Inserting a smiley, copying some text from above or not highlighting all the text are the only ways I know to keep this from happening. not the end of the world, just an annoyance

Too many clicks for a post, with the option to edit, the need to preview could be considered redundant.

custom right click menu?

I hate the private mail [I still use it] too many clicks.

Anyone else have thoughts?

Wish my site worked as well as CR4 does, actually.

Might be nice if I got a tool bar when I went in via Safari.

For a long time I never knew that if you clicked on the powered by Globalspec name up there on the right top, it would take you to the sponsor.

I appreciate somebody paying for the work that it takes to make this place run.

My other suggestions have been rejected by the administration.

I would like to see the "Home" button always on the page, rather than scrolling to it. Maybe also "See all threads."

Once you preview and submit a post, the "back" arrow takes you to the submit page, then the preview page, etc.--through more than one loop if you also edited a post. That might not be easy to fix.

***

Not exactly a user interface problem, but I question the hasty closure of threads. Just because a responder shouts "homework" or "over unity" doesn't prove it, and I have missed the chance to reply to some threads that disappeared (too) quickly.

My personal dislikes are the spell check is very glitchy and the edit function lasts for 15 minutes. Its not until I have had a little while beforeI reread my posts that I find bad or incorrect grammer that could come off as wrong or misleading.

Oh yes and the spell check is very glitchy too.

Also the way it intrweaves the post numbers throughout the threds makes finding the most recent ones somewhat of a pain as well.

And the spell check is kind of weak as well.

I like the site and the people on it even though its comes off as fairly low end for a engineering related site. Being engineering related I would think it would be the most perfectly functional and most adaptable site ever created.

But instead the spell check is kind of lame and the post edit time is dismaly short.

Sorry for the misspsellings but guess what is hanging again.

I don't have any problem with the spell check, other than the 27 clicks it takes to use it Maybe once a month the CR4 server balks, retry no problem

You should go to your profile & change the comment format from nested to flat/cronological, I find it much easier to follow the conversations.

Changed the post format! Much better.

Now can I knock out the forum spell check so the one on my tool bar can do its thing?

ieSpell disapears on the tools drop down menu while I am at this site for some reason.

When I right click

I get:

Undo

Redo

Bypass Custom Menu

Close

Click Bypass & it gives me a pop up saying the next right click will bring up your browsers normal menu

What do you get?

Garth-

Right click:

Same thing, but only sometimes. Sometimes, I get a different menu (which includes "Paste" which is what I am usually looking for.

I use Firefox under Ubuntu, which might make a difference...

I was only talking about when I right click & the cursor is inside the editor box on my XP [sp3], Firefox & google toolbar machine.

If I'm using my unbuntu box [8.04 lts] & right click on a word that google toolbar [I think] has identified [underlined in red] as misspelled. I get suggestions for corrections...

I had the ie spellcheck widgit For a different forum, But took it out to reduce bloat.

When I really get stuck I open a document on open office & check spelling there

While the CR4 spellcheck works ok for me most of the time, I count 5 clicks to check 1 word

Which version of unbuntu do you use?

Re: What improvements could be made to the user interface?

Garth-

I currently have 7.10, 8.04, 9.04 & 9.10 running on various machines. 7.10 was the first version I started using regularly and is on a machine with dual boot with XP. I use 8.04 with CAELinux (a multiphysics project that gives me FEA and fluid dynamics) bercause that is what CAELinux was packaged with. I put 9.04 (32-bit) and 9.10 (64-bit) on my new laptop (dual boot) to run comparisons between the two (both 32-bit vs. 64-bit and version differences). I would say that, overall, 9.04 is my current favorite. I am in the process of migrating key components of CAELinux to 9.10 to take advantage of 64-bit dual core capabilities for computationally intense applications, but have some issues with graphics on the laptop (uses Intel graphics- NVIDIA would have been a better choice).

I will eventually rid myself of 7.10, but need time to get all the critical stuff off before I upgrade that machine to 9.04 or 9.10...

If I go to the tool bar at the top of the screen to get to where the ieSpell should be its not there.

Or at least thats where I can find it on all other websites if its not in the right click menus.

If I use the right click and then go to 'bypass the "custom" menu' I see the 'ieSpell options' function is there but its not active. It wont highlight and work.

As far as the dictionary method I will give you the same logic I have used for 30+ years with English teachers.

If I knew how to spell the word I could look it up but then I wouldn't need to then, wouldn't I? But since I dont know how its spell how am I supposed to find it in a referance book that is spelling dependant?

I would like the ability to single space when making a carriage return [enter key on windows/linux]

I don't always want to start a new paragraph.

I've said it several times and been ignored*, so it's probably hopeless, but I 'll say again ; I'd like to be able to forward PM's to an external e-mail account. That way I could archive the good/funny stuff much easier. If it happens, I can clear out the x-hundred pages of stuff languishing on a server. I try to be good, and occasionally trim it down, but it's tempting to just let it roll and see what the limit is . My own IP wrote to me recently, saying I was maxed out - didn't even know it had been set to leave a copy of stuff on the server . I'm sure there must be a tech/security reason why admin haven't enabled my request, but still, it's on my bucket list.

* Yes, I probably bring this upon myself !

When I click on the notification email it should take me to the actual comment within the discussion, not the 1st page.

I need this for all threads not just BBT

I would like to be able to search by post number. Also, when looking at the list of posts by various members, having a reference to post number in the list, rather than just the date, would be helpful...

Re: What improvements could be made to the user interface?

if you view cronologicaly there are 100 posts per page.

page one = 0-100

page two = 101-200

if the thread has more than 3 pages

go to page 2 & change the pg # on the address bar of your browser & refresh

this method also works when you have a bunch of pages as the result of a cr4 search. Go to the last page & that will tell you how many pages there are, helping narrow down.

I do agree there could be some better search functions.

I'd like to be able to search within an individual thread, where as now you get results throughout the forum or section...
