Food Labels

01/26/2007 9:04 PM

Is the nutrition information on a food product coded into the bar code. Can I get the food nutrition information on the product through a standard bar code software program for the food industry or must each product label be scanned and then OCRd and entered into a spreadsheet, etc to get the info.

Does anyone make such a system for home/personal use for dieters to watch their daily intake

Get into RFID tags.

There you can introduce much mor einformation to the tag than into a label.

The barcode is just there to identify the product so that the computer can look up the price and notify logistics that its being moved / bought etc...

Get busy with your keyboard.

The bar code only identifies the particular product.

OCR is highly unlikely top be at all practical in any affordable form, due to the almost infinite variation in nutrition information, from format and font size, to related serving size etc.

The only way that it could be done is if you could get a database of all the products nutritional information and then use a bar code scanner to identify the product and a program to look it up and enter it in a uniform manner in the spreadsheet. I very much doubt such a database and software exists.

With all due respect, what this post sounds like is an overweight computer savvy person looking for an excuse not to get on a diet, but it could be the entrepreneurial spirit at work.

In the shop the bar code is just a index number used to link the price and stock control to the product at the point of sale. the database at the shop might contain more info. The manufacturer use the same number to assist with process and sales control and that database may contain the required values because it should be required for planning and pricing.

try the manufacturer directly.
