Both are almost same and both are put inline (unlike Relief valves that are usually on branch)

The pressure reducing valve maintains the downstream pressure. The feedback is from the downstream pipeline and the valve adjusts its orifice to maintain the pressure in the downstream.

Pressure sustaining valve takes its feedback signal from upstream. It adjusts its orifice to maintain the pressure upstream, regardless of flow and other characteristics.

So the difference is the point from which feedback is taken. Both the cases the pump is oversized in terms of flow and pressure, and the additinal in reducing valve is bypassed through relief line (branched out) whereas in sustaining valve through inline drain.

Excellent description. I tried to give it a GA, but the system is apparently overloaded and not accepting votes.

Some alternative terms for pressure sustaining valve are inlet pressure regulator or back pressure regulator. A pressure reducing valve is also known as an outlet pressure regulator. There are also differential pressure regulators that maintain a constant difference between inlet and outlet pressures, receiving feedback from both.

I am a regular on sabbatical . And we know each other at CR4 having contributed on same posts many time. In fact you had not been lately visible (a bit infrequent) as seem to be a lot of others even Milo is a bit low nowadays or may be our target posts do not match .

As a guest I am just looking how the other regulars rate the posts - by name of the poster or the merit of the post.

And I am disappointed.
