The maximum load on 500KVA DG set will be 500*0.8 = 400kW, even though the generator is capable of supplying 500KW at UPF. The rated power factor of a DG set specifies the maximum kW loading of the DG set which is 400kW in your case.

However, the DG sets are usually not run at their rated kW capacity. The kW loading on the DG set may be limited to 85-90% of the maximum kW loading of the DG set.

I'm agreed to Electrnaut. It will be better if you run your DG around 350KW.

Dear All,

I am with you Mr Electronaut, and I also agree for 85 to 90% loading, but I have additional information as follows:

Iwas found in field that the DG has two dutie ratings: 1). For intermittent the DG rating is 400 kW as stated, 2).For continuous duty is 0.8 x 400 kW = 320 kW.

Therefore, we have to ask the manufacture for duty rating either intermittent duty or continuous duty.

Regards

The Alternator loading depends on the capacity of the Engine coupled. If the Engine BHP is selected to match the Alternator rating or more, then you can go up to the capacity of the engine at UPF to the max of Alternator rating in this case it is 500KW.

Dear Mr. Kittamani,

It depends upon several factors - such as the highest capacity of Motors and Type, Type of starter, like DOL, STAR-DELTA, soft-starter used to limit the kick-load.

Either of those things, though the equipment doesn't have any capacity margin at that load figure.
