Hi engsawalha,

I googled HBr materials compatability and found that 316SS and Monel were compatable with anhydrous HBr.

However please note that the above only applies for the anhydrous HBr gas (less than 1.0ppm H2O). As you have 50% solution, I don't believe any metal would be suitable for this acid.

Good luck,

Anthony

The ASM Handbook of Corrosion Data (1989) ISBN: 0-87170-361-0; Pages 287-289 Gives some corrosion rate data points for Hydrobromic Acid at 47 or 48% concentration:

Zirconium alloy 702 - boiling - 0.13 mm/yr

Zirconium alloy 705 - boiling - 0.13 mm/yr

Tantalum 8 day test - 100C - 0.5 micrometers/yr

Niobium 8 day test - 100 degC - 11.2 micrometers/yr

Rhodium 62% concentration, duration of test not given - 100 degC - 2.2 millimeters/yr.

The ASM reference provides some commentaries about the above materials and source reference information for the test data. There is also a general commentary on page 287 on behavior of 304 and 316 in a 37 day test at unstated concentrations of HBR acid; data is from a cited corporate source.

How about borosilicate glass instead?

A search on "titanium pumps" suggested that titanium is good for HBr. If flow and pressure are moderate, there may also be suitable plastic pumps.
