Positioner

03/04/2010 8:30 AM

Hi,

I'm doing a market research for positioners at the moment and after getting all the data there are following modells left:

Siemens SIPART PS2

Metso neles ND9000H

ABB TZDIC

Masoneilan SVI II AP

Tyco Avid SmartCal/ Westlock iCoT 5300

Foxboro SRD 991

Flowserve Logix 3200 MD/ IQ

Flowserve PMV D3

Fisher DVC 6000

Does anyone have experience with one of these positioners.

Thanks

Thomas

In the mill I work at we have about 100 pmv d3,s and one srd 991. I find the srd 991 to be a great unit. User friendly and easy to set up on fieldbus. Pmv D3s are great as well but requires more matainice.

My overall pick would be the SRD 991. Its compact, trouble free, and a small nice looking, durable unit.

My dear,

i have 14 flowserve positioner PMV D3 and we experience many problems of them so can you help me for this issue. most of time, the positioner is stuck specially during calibration and sometimes we miss the communications between positioner in field & DCS so do you dealt with that before. your quick reply will be highly appreciated

I have experience with all the above some more than others. Some have similar traits and options, while others do not have the other characteristics as others. Depending on application of positioner, some are better than others as far as characterized tuning, alarms, user friendly and so on. Streamlining is a big plus with some of them as they can accommodate rotary as well as linear with simple bracketry/linkage changeovers. Delivery, customer support, quality control is a big factor to look at. I would be more than happy to give you my opinion with more parameters being disclosed. Good luck.

Hi,

ok the positioners should be used in PressureSwingAdsorption plants.

Important points are:

- able to persist about 400.000 cycles of operation/ year

- minimum capacity of 10 Nm3/ h (at supply pressure 1-6 barg)

- analogue feddback option

- Hart communication

- Intrinsic Safety certificates: ATEX, FM, CSA

- Autostart

Moreover it would be nice to know, if the producer has got experience in equiping of petrochemical plants, or even of PSA plants.

Thanks Thomas

Put a DVC6000 equipped valve on a large WFI circulating skid we built last summer. I did not do the Fieldbus programming, an Emerson programmer did the Delta V programming, but I did have to tweak the positioner a bit. The zero and span were reset during testing, after working on the valve. We had a problem with the mechanical portion of the positioner (this is not really part of the 6000) coming loose, necessitating the afore mentioned tweaking, but none with the electronic positioner. It functioned perfectly.

What do you need to know about it?

yeah I also heard only good things about the DVC 6000, but the problem is for us it is only a second choice because it got no analogue feedback

so i hope i hear something about the other positioners as well

After taking all things into consideration with options, availability and streamlining for most applications I would have to go with the Masoneilan SVI II. The Masoneilan is probably the most versatile of the listed positioners. The Fisher DVC 6000, Bailey TZID both Flowserve products are top shelf. Others mentioned are good products as well but the best bang for the buck with all aspects taken into consideration the Masoneilan SVI II AP would be my choice.

Alot of the issues with listed positioners will be mounting capabilities, delivery time, customer service and options. Masoneilan has been very commendable in all aspects. Mounting is a big issue with some positioners,as all are not manufactured for certain actuators. Most matainence people in plants now are very versatile with there capabilities but are limited to constructing the modifications needed for certain applications. All listed can supply with positioners but some are limited for mounting. Customer service and access to IOM's are accessable for most listed but some need work on there CS. I have called several of the listed companies and spoke with internal associates to try and improve these areas. Most have strived to get there but have not rteached that tier yet.

I hope this might help your decision as I do deal with the companies on a daily basis some more than others. I am only stating this wth my experiences of products listed.

Have a great day!!

I work as a consultant with an equipment supplier to the utility power industry. My client uses over 1,000 PS2 positioners /year. We have used most of the brands you mention, but have found the Siemens PS2 to not only be very reliable, and cost effective, but to also be the easiest to install and setup. Many of the smart positioners like the DVC 6000 require a HART handheld to setup. This is a major disadvantage. The PS2 is also the lowest consumer of instrument air and should save most users over $100/year in compressed air cost.

Jim:

I just posted the thread below but then I saw your earlier response on the PS2. Any thoughts?

We're looking at retrofitting about 200 valves in our facility to use positioners, and our initial selection is the Siemens PS2. I hear good things about it (mostly from the rep), but I can't afford any surprises on this project. Does anyone have any feedback on the PS2, good or bad. Mostly, I need to know if there are any nuances or shortcomings to be aware of.

Thanks for your time!

The Siemens positioner is a good run of the mill positioner. But in my opinion the Masoneilan SVI is a by far a better product. Most of the time I see they end up going to the Siemens because of price. The mounting for the Masoneilan is very robust and lasting. Software is commendable!! The hall effect design is second to none!Availability and technical support is something to take a glimpse at is well.

You'd be surprised if you called other distributors and told them what you were promoting to do and a change of cost would happen immediately, or at least should!!!

Good luck!!!
