How to say 0.001" or 0.01mm orally?

03/13/2010 4:40 AM

I am a Chinese,I often deal with drawings in INCH unit.

As the 0.001",it is very unconvenient if I pronounce it as O point O O one inch,

and as the 0.01mm,it is very unconvenient either if I pronounce it as O point O one millimetter.

Can anybody tell me how to say 0.001" or 0.01mm orally?

Thanks.

We use the word zero,

so "point zero zero one inches" or "point zero one milimeters" is our convention.

but again it varies between the usage system "o point o o one inches" is equally in vogue.

In India, 0.001" is called a thou ( Thousandth of an inch) & 0.01 mm is called 10 microns.

A "thou" is the most common slang for the inch example and 10 microns is the most common (but not the only) terminology that I've heard for the MM example.....this is in the 3 decimal place world.

It may depend on the industry.....kind of like 6 vs a half dozen. Don't forget about the metric comma/decimal point thing.

0.001" is a 'thou of an inch' or just a 'thou' that is pronounced like thow, and 0.01mm is a 'hundredth of a mil'

Other examples are 0.007" is seven thou, 0.02" is twenty thou. 0.2" is two tenths of a inch. 0.07mm is seven hundredths of a mil, 0.2mm is zero (or 'O') point two of a mil.

Hope that helps!

In everyday conversation, we would say 1 mil instead of 0.001" and 10 microns instead of 0.01 mm. Of course, that's in western PA; I've no idea what those foreigners in Ohio and Philadelphia say.

This foreigner from Ohio, when stumbling into a shop (like those in Pennsyvania perhaps?) still using the inch system, would say "one -one thousandth of an inch." when speaking of 0.001". I would add to the discussion that while people say "thou" when it is to the right of the decimal, the thousandth is correct way to assure that they understand the value.

At those shops that have higher precision and world class systems that are already working internally to microns, the 0.01 mm would be called out as 10 microns.

Thanks for the spot of humor.

milo (not Kilo) :-)

I'll have you know our high precision shops all use dual dimensioning - inches and furlongs. Just wait, someday the Pirates will break .300 and you'll see we were right all along.

Re: How to say 0.001" or 0.01mm orally?

I am English speaking (of a sort) and living and working in China. I work with only Chinese engineers and we work in both systems of measurement.

I am repeating what many other posters have said, but with the assurance that Chinese speaking engineers understand this English oral usage-

0.001 inch - 1 thou.

0.01 inch - 10 thou

Micron is one millionth of a meter.

0.01 mm is 10 micron ( the term one hundredth is also commonly used and understood, especially when referring to shaft runouts etc)

Ni hao ma?

1 international inch is equal to:

  • 1,000 thou (1 thou is 0.001 inches.)
  • 1,000 mil (1 mil = 1 thou = 0.001 inches)
  • 1,000,000 microinches (1 μin is one millionth of an inch.)
  • ~0.02778 yards (1 yard is equal to 36 inches.)
  • 2.54 centimeters (1 centimeter is equal to about 0.3937 international inches.)

Hope this help

Actually, the query was for "how to say these" not what are their equivalents.
