Skype uses voice over internet protocol and can be used to call mobiles or to text them...

All new GSM systems use VoIP, which we call it as PS (Packet Switching), and we use Softswitches to provide switching between mobile users, so in fact you do not really feel the difference, and you can not, as the IP backbone replaced the Digital Trunking backbone with new signaling system that is completely compatible to the used system SS7.

so what we have now in most of the GSM system is mobile over IP.

Hi,

You can use VIOP to GSM gateway.

What maybe slightly more interesting is the other way round, that is certain mobile phones can, when in a local hotspot or open WLAN connection, call any other phone using Skype software and a prepaid Skype (or similar) account.

To go the way you have asked in your question would entail "knowing" that the mobile had such an account and knowing that a WLAN Hotspot was available at that moment for the Mobile I believe.

Costs of around €0.02 per minute to anywhere in the world as against €0.15 for a call just within Germany on a normal mobile. If the other user was also a Skype user or similar, the call would be even cheaper - free in fact!

I recently checked up on the list of mobiles that can do this and it must be about 8 or so already, but I did not do an exact count. If you need phone details and numbers, just let me know.

yes that's right, but here as I tested several types of WiFi phones, like Skype or QiiQ ones, I found different quality levels, as processing packiets on small processor is effecting the quality of the voice, and in this case we would have several factors that compromise the voice quality:

Wireless with IP

Voice with IP

IP with processing (Coding / Decoding)

so till now the usage can be good for places with high rate calls only, which might have some VoIP termination in.

NasserJ, it would be great to have more details of which processors Intel or what and the OS (or even phone types/manufacturers) that handle the voice quality better than others as I am thinking of buying something in the very near future....

I am even thinking of having a WLAN Cellphone without a SIM card, JUST to use when in a WLAN Hotspot for phoning.....

Thanks in advance.
