Electrolysis of CO2

03/14/2010 11:46 PM

Is it possible to Electrolyze CO2 and break it into the constituent elements?

Could it then be recombined to produce combustion fuel? What is the combusiton energy of such a reaction?

Would there be a commercial market for the pure carbon and O2?

Would it be possible to store energy using this method?

Where do you get the energy to electrolize the CO2? Then, when you recombine (burn) it, do you get as much energy back? How well does CO2 conduct electricity in the first place, so that electrolysis can even get started? What sort of stoking system do you have in mind to feed carbon to a combustion process? (Just a few things to consider.)

Why bother with CO2 when it is much easier to electrolyse H2O (rhetorical question)?

Why unnecessary electrolyze CO2 when there is a better method available to concert it into a fuel?

It is done in nature all around us - Photosynthesis. This will be a far better and green method to do it.

Put into this perspective CO2 can be used by fire fighters on electrical fires because it not conductive...that's the best non-answer I can think of.

You may find what you want by searching NASA reports. They spent some effort learning to electrolytically reduce CO2 to methane. It's not a very efficient process, but they were thinking terraforming on other planets, where CO2 and solar energy are the only resources available.
