I am installing new lights and the facility has 48vdc power nearby 120'. Could I install a 48vdc:277vac 4kW power inverter? Does that exist and I can't see any draw backs?
Yes you can, Philtek makes one and Galaxey also does. We use them in our cell sites to power up the whole building during a commercial power failure. The catch is you have to have enough battery backup to last any lengthly amount of time till commercial power is restored.
Go to this link and you will find a 48 vdc to 277 3 phase inverter.
We have two 4 ton systems on our building sites but when the commercial goes it cuts back to no a/c but opens the fresh air so all the battery power is saved for the rectifers. You have about a 2 hour window to get to site and restore power by mobile generator if there is not one on site.
GA Have used 48VDC battery packs with inverters for up to 6KVA 277V UPS. The 48VDC input variation to the inverter from his power source is likely less than the battery as it approaches the specified time limit (usually about -20%), so the transformer can be a standard and more efficient.
