Who Invented the Stapler?

03/30/2010 8:08 AM

hi all

I am curious to know who invented a STAPLER and STAPLES. It is such a cool invention to keep papers together, otherwise we were fumbling with paper clips which is also notable for organizing papers etc.

I remember when we used to keep papers together with PINs which went through papers and held them together and sometimes would heart our very fingers.

This sounds too much like homework. I found the answer in 5 seconds by searching. Try it sometime.

Why we people are not straight forward and reply with the name of the person.End of the story/ discussion. Rather than linger on and brag that u found in 5 minutes.

Why not we all share the knowledge u got in 5 minutes.

It will be appreciable if the question is replied with an answer and nothing beyond that.

Why do we waste other's time.

Obviously, giving you the answer would have done no good anyway.

I didn't say I found the answer in 5 minutes. I said I found it in 5 SECONDS! Just as you could have done by looking for yourself!

It's nice that you'd rather use CR4 than Google, but we're just trying to educate you about an old adage.

"Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish and you have fed him for a lifetime."

Just Google the phrase "Who invented the stapler" and you'll find the answer.

Probably a Scotsman or maybe the Chinese...
But doubtless the Americans will make a movie claiming that they did .
Next years 'must see' Brad Pitt in 'The Clincher' lets hope it has Anne Hathaway too and maybe it'll be in 3D.

Oh, right! And I suppose you blokes will have a BBC special with Sir David Jason explaining how we swiped it? And then losing the evidence on his desk?

Isn't it hard to see where you're going with your nose stuck up in the air like that?

1866 was when the USA patent was granted. His ancestors might have been from Scotland.

Invented in England, the staple would probably have been called the splinter.

Oh, gimme a break. Every schoolboy knows that Joshua P. Staples was issued patent No. 183,706 in 1849 for just such a device.

It would be better for you to remain silent and thought a fool, than to make a statement and remove all doubt.

Re: Who Invented the Stapler?

03/31/2010 10:44 AM

The first known stapler was handmade in the 18th century in France for King Louis XV, by an expatriate Norwegian. Each staple was inscribed with the insignia of the royal court, as required. The growing uses of paper in the 19th century created a demand for an efficient paper fastener. On August 7, 1866, the Patent Novelty Mfg Co. patented the Novelty Paper Fastener. It loaded a single staple at a time, and was used mainly to bind papers or books—but also carpet, furniture, and boxes. The P.N. Mfg Co. made staples for the fastener in several sizes.

McGill stapler

In 1866, Joan Barbour received U.S. patent 56,587 for a small, bendable brass paper fastener that was a precursor to the modern staple. In 1867, he received U.S. patent 67,665 for a press to insert the fastener into paper. He showed his invention at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and continued to work on these and other various paper fasteners through the 1880s. In 1868 a patent was also taken out for a stapler in England. On February 18, 1879, C.H. Gould received patent 212,316 for the McGill Single-Stroke Staple Press. This device weighed over two and a half pounds and loaded a single 1/2 inch wide wire staple, which it could drive through several sheets of paper.

The first published use of the word "stapler" to indicate a machine for fastening papers with a thin metal wire was in an advertisement in the American Munsey's Magazine in 1901.

In the early 1900s, several devices were developed and patented that punched and folded papers to attach them to each other without a metallic clip. The Clipless Stand Machine (made in North Berwick) sold from 1909 into the 1920s. It cut a tongue in the paper that it folded back and tucked in. Bump's New Model Paper Fastener used a similar cutting and weaving technology.

Good enough?

"Not so smart" is trying to look knowledgeable. Actually the answer is as worse as that of Tornado, but dangerous if someone should take it as more than a joke.

However the joke is carefully concocted. It does contain truth buried deep in its madness.

If u go to www.google.com/patents and check the patent numbers given u will find they all really do relate to staplers, but to staplers invented by George McGill. So is the jokester just clever? Or actually correct? Was McGIll the first? Or just another?

Who knows.

Consider the work needed to concoct a clever answer like that? Time waster big time.
