How Do I Remove Frozen Hydraulic Piston?

04/01/2010 10:50 AM

I have a 1950's Koken Barber chair (523NE) that I'm restoring. The chair did not raise up or down when I bought it and upon inspection I found that the piston is frozen and will not move up or down. Thus, the previous owner broke the shaft that connects to the piston trying to get the chair to pump up or down. I assume the piston should pull straight up out of the cylinder for repair and service and I have pushed and pulled on the piston fairly hard without and movement. I have not been to forceful in fear of breaking the piston.

Does anyone have any suggestion or comments that would help me out, I would appreciate it very much!

if you can, pour a light lubricating oil in from the top, (lots of it) and let it soak through for 24 hours or more.

That might do.

There is another forum that may get better results:

http://www.barberpole.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php

That's right! A forum regarding... barbershop equipment!

A little heat may help if you're careful.

Are you sure it is a piston? Some come with a pedal that commands a toothed bar. Like the one in the Godfather part?

I restored a barber chair last year; the story's on this site somewhere. My piston was frozen. I soaked in in KROIL for nearly a month. Kept checking it, applied a small amount of force on occasion, very small amount of heat, kept it oiled; it finally came loose after that month.

Went through it, works great. Good luck with yours.

I had a trailer lift with both pistons stuck and no way to remove the cylinders without a cutting torch. Ask every knowledgeable person in the business and an ole cotton farmer came by and said 'do it with Iodine'...Hey it worked on both Cylinders..Took little over a pint, let it set about three days...Tried it on compressor cyl. and motors..Works...

Wow...wonder how the farmer discovered this? Have had a number of great suggestions that I'm going to try. This one may be last since I'll have to pour all the oil I've dumped in already.

Thanks to all that have submitter suggestions I'll try them all till one works.

Hey, I ask him, He said his cotton press is huge and it sits from year to year and so does his wool presses all hydraulic, some times for two years and the moisture causes them to rust or seize..also sugested coke a cola but wasn't to proud of adding more moisture..Ask how he found out about the Iodine he said some ole farmer told him..See ya.

Hi jtd405,

Was that Iodine dissolved in alcohol, as in Tincture of Iodine? Iodine is a solid in it's pure state. Just wondering what exactly you used.

We use a penetrating oil callede PB Blaster on all kinds of equipment. This equipment is exposed to extreme heat and moisture(steam). It always works and usually in less than 24 hrs. Hope this helps>

Just a follow up on my frozen piston.....I soaked it in the Kriol oil that was suggested and after three weeks and a few raps on the piston itself form a long extension bar from a scoket set it finally broke lose. Everything seems to be in good order and thatnks again for all the suggestions!
