Another Number Riddle

04/02/2010 12:12 AM

I posted this in one of Roger's threads, but it has not been solved yet. It is pretty simple and does not require arcane knowledge (in the sense that most 6th graders understand the basic concept). As far as I know, a web search will not help.

What's the next number in this sequence? 75, 83, 93, 135, 203, ...

If you know the 6th number, post it, and wait a while before explaining, to see if it helps anyone comes up with the 7th.

Hi Blink,

Is it 363?

No, not 342, although it would be interesting to know how you came up with that.

I think most engineering types would not require a calculator to figure this out. It may be more basic than people realize. A related concept is used in adding 129 and 291 to get 420.

No, at least not in my simple scheme.

Here's a hint: the seventh number in the series (the one just after the one we are looking for) is 1023.

Here's another hint, maybe.

Just a minute ago, I found a website that would make coming up the the numbers in this series very very fast. The only problem is that if you knew where to look for the website, then you would have already figured the riddle concept... at which point the website would be somewhat superfluous.

Well, here's another hint. The element of the series just before the first one I gave (75) would be 69. Another hint: If I gave you the 9th element in the series, the concept would be much more obvious.

Circa 5:30 pm eastern time today, I'll spill the beans, so there is not much time left to garner big money, fame, and fortune.

This is the ninth number, which should pretty well give you the answer to the other numbers.

1001011

As I said, quite basic...

No, but that is close, in one way.

The ninth number has a distinctive appearance, having only ones and zeros.

The number that would come three before the first number (75) would be 5A.

Re: Another Number Riddle

04/02/2010 7:37 PM

OK, OK, OK.

1001011 is 75 in binary.

So the numbers are all theoretically equal to 75... first in base 10 , then base 9, then base 8, base 7, base 6, base 5 (300), etc.

HOWEVER, the nut case who put this together somehow put down 93 instead of 113 for base 8... which I just noticed a few seconds ago, as I wrote the sentence above (which I then had to rewrite). Arrrrrghhh.!!.

Let's see, how do I back out of this gracefully.... Oh yeh... I meant to do that , and intended to put in, as part of the challenge "Find the mistake in this."

Please don't break my arms!

Ahem! 6th graders understand the concept of number bases? I don't think I was even introduced to it until I was in high school!

I was thinking that as a possiblty but then it looked like he just reversed the order which followed out would be 101, 100 and then possibly start over with 200. I may be way off.

For the original problem, the 10th number would be 000...000 (75 zeroes). Then, skipping zero as a base, you get into negative integer bases....

I would set the first ten numbers of the sequence as:

75
83
93
135
203
390
1023
2798
6915
15213

Is this correct? I did not use binary to solve it.
