Outer Diameter of Pipe

04/03/2010 6:28 AM

Thanks for the responses over the captioned subject.I am also aware that by knowing thw flow and velocity we can find only th ID of the pipe.

I have received a piping calc from our vendor, in the sheet they have first calculated the OD of the pipe and the thickness of the pipe was calculated from the ASME B31.1

tm=PD/2(SE+PY)+A where D is the outer dia.

How they are fixing the OD first and calculated thickness.?

It is normal for sales to work on nominal sizes and class. The calculations are done for them by computer program or friction chart actually working on ID.

They are fixing the OD because that is the way to do it (standard available pipe).

By all means, if you want to perform a different calculation and come up with a 9" NPS pipe (9.5" OD?) go ahead. (Good luck getting any fittings that will match up to that custom pipe: flanges, elbows, tee's, .... )
