Need Help With Emachine T1115I

04/06/2010 5:40 PM

I have an old Emachine T1115I have reinstalled the hard drive numerous times and the more I do the slower it gets. The last time I did it it takes 45 min from the time you turn it on to get to the home page and load ever thing. I want to install service pack 2 and it took 6 hrs. now I went to my computer and right clicked the hard drive and selected tool and am running check and fix errors and it has been running a good 3 hrs and it has only 19% done on the 4th step. Would this be a processor problem or hard drive? I don't have the money to buy a new one and it is costing me $100.00 a month to rent a used one that is not very much better. Any help will be appreciated Thank you

Hi Tledoux,

You mean these: http://www.emachines.com/products/ ?

Have you contacted them? I would never rent a computer for $100/month since you can get a decent computer for $300 - $400 nowadays.

Mike

T1115 specs(?):
> 1 GHz Intel Celeron CPU
> 128MB RAM
> 20GB hard drive
> integrated video
> CD-ROM
> 56K modem
> Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
If this is correct, your main problem is not enough RAM.

If you are running Windows XP with service pack 2 or 3, you want at LEAST the following hardware:
> Pentium 4 @ 1.5 GHz
> 512 MB RAM
> 40 GB Hard drive
The RAM is critical and anything less will be painfully slow. XP will run significantly faster with RAM upgraded to 1 GB. This hardware is suitable for general surfing and office work, but NOT 3-D gaming.

If your machine cannot be upgraded to these levels at a reasonable cost, I suggest you consider the purchase of a used machine. MANY are available for under $100, if you are located here in the US. Search Ebay for one that fits your needs.

I recently acquired a P4, 3GHz, 1GB RAM, 80 GB HDD desktop for under $50 and use it to run Windows XP SP3 on one 40 GB partition and Ubuntu Linux on the remaining 40 GB partition. Both OS's and all the applications I need run very well on this hardware. Good luck!

Hi, TIedoux,

Can you clarify what you mean by saying "reinstalled" the hard drive? I'm unclear if you mean restoring the system onto the same hard drive using the Emachine CD or if you mean physically replacing the hard drive with a different one. If you're doing a system restore with the CD the machine should come up like new and just as fast as it originally was. Until you start installing the service packs the machine should fly because it's not having to strain to keep up with new types of software.

Once your system is up and running, go to download.com and download the program named CPUZ. There are two of them, you probably don't want the 64-bit one. When you run it, it will interrogate your system and give you all kinds of information on memory, processor type, etc. that will help in ultimately diagnosing your problem.

In the meantime, since the system does function (though slowly) I doubt your processor or drive is bad. MJB's probably right about the memory, assuming that it is in fact 128MB. Just a guess, but I suspect the system is somewhat out of date and can't keep up with Microsoft's patches and updates. Even the best, fastest, most expen$ive machine available today will someday be in somebody's closet collecting dust, that's just the nature of computers. The only way to keep up is to replace the system every so often, painful though that process may be.

As others mentioned, it's not a processor or hard drive problem. It's a memory (ram) problem, somewhat aggravated by the Celeron processor. That machine is a dog by more contemporary standards.

Buy more memory (if you can find any for that machine), or, better yet, take the money you would spend on the memory and invest it in a newer used machine. Then give that machine to someone who recycles worthless computer hardware.

Oh, and don't buy anymore Celerons. They are intentionally crippled cpu's aimed at people who strictly buy on price point.

In my opinion, it sounds like it is infected with Malware, Spyware, or both. Alternatively, you may have a large amount of unnecessary files. Use Defender Pro Malware remover and/or run Disk Cleanup to get rid of the unnecessary files. Disk Defragmenter also makes the Hard Drive run faster.
