Infrared Video

04/08/2010 12:21 PM

I would like to put some IR leds on an object & be able to take video of the object in motion

I'm hoping to use the IR as invisible points of reference.

the video would then appear to be normal, unless the IR reveal mode was turned on

I would like to use a nice common format like avi so I could transmit with an email...

Suggestions?

most ccd cameras see infra red but the mommy or daddy of them all is Sony they use a ccd chip thats very sensitive and you can use the camera in night-shot mode.

the camera has its own IR illumination built in which you can turn off if required

any good ?

you're right about the cameras

the software is the issue then...

The project is being able to evaluate different mountain bike suspension set ups, along with this the position & techniques of the rider.

there are reasons to keep a lot of the evaluation data private from the personnel at the test sites.

Have a look at the iPod Nano- yeah, it is supposed to be a music player, but according to Apple website information, it offers an "infrared" mode for the video capture...I haven't tried it, but am intrigued, since it is orders of magnitude cheaper than a typical infrared camera...

No way to separate the data post camera. You probably need two cameras and you may have to put an IR cut filter on the one you allow others to see. Keep the output of the other one private, just use the eyepiece and don't enable the screen.

GA: I'm guessing that you'd need to physically clamp the two cameras together.

Can you use red LEDs and just track them? I have messed around with roborealm vision and it does a great job of blob separation and tracking.

If the iPod nano really works the way they say it does on the Apple website, you can accomplish this with a single "camera".

Re: Infrared Video

I was going for the whole 9 yards

I could then have anyone shoot the video.

& the analysis done remotely.

I really only need 10-20 frames, but it's easier to pick the right frames from 100's

I can open a single frame with photoshop[gimp] on a grid & see the relationship, which is what we've been doing.

I'm trying to take it to the next level of precision, without letting on exactly what the key factors are

I was thinking about regular old red led's, but the lighting gets trickier, bright sun, making them invisible. laser pointers being too directional.

I'm looking for 3-5 points, that will be distinct from 20-30 meters, The points being no more than 1 meter apart.

of course the budget is zero, until we can provide proof of concept

WELL after much though i think i have a solution.

you need two small ccd cameras one set up for infra red and one normal.

now you could either strap them together side by side or one on top of the other.

Or one looking straight ahead and one looking down at a piece of plain glass set at 45 degrees, This will allow one camera to look ahead through the glass i would suggest this one to be the normal one as the glass will filter out some of the infra red. And one looking down would see the reflected image off the glass at 45 degrees this one would be the infra red one.

you the need a piece of security recording kit like the one i have that will record up to four channels simultaneously onto a laptop, With the option of encoding some of the pictures.

the encoded ones would need the code to unscramble them.

whilst the other video channel could be left unscrambled.

this way anyone could do the recording but all they would see is the normal picture.

Only you with the decrypt key would be able to view the other one.

How about that?

Re: Infrared Video

or you could place one of these cameras ontop of the normal camera this would aid the tester to set up the view and see what both cameras would be lookig at but only see what is on the normal camera.

now the one fetured in the link could be set up to dial you and send the infra red pictures direct to a remote recording system.

then you will know whats happeing in real time and if reqyuire could ring the tester up and ask for a different test to be carried out.

How cool is that, Remote covert testing?
