Avery Labels for Custom Electronic Words?

04/08/2010 1:11 PM

I goggled and most labels are return address, CD etc. I need small font < 16 to print out words like "Gain", "Volume", "8 ohm". I would like to use Microsoft Office 2007 with HP ink jet. Also no rub off, peel off professional looking. Anybody know of a good way to do this? What kind of Avery label paper that is not too expensive. Also cutting the label to put on the sheet metal without having crooked edges a rectangle box for a pro look.

Try engraving the words with a router or diamond stylus and maybe even colour fill.

Hi MM,

I got one of these and it has worked well for me - fairly inexpensive. A pretty good variety of tapes with different background and font colors are available.

I have also used printable decal paper for instrument face design - gave it a really professional look except trying to position the wet 3 x 6" sheet was pretty hard to do without it distorting. Spraying over it with a clear acrylic, sealed it nicely.

What I have done in the past is put clear tape over the label to prevent the ink from smearing. As a bonus, the glossiness of the tape makes the letters stand out.

I am going to try your idea using Glossy Scotch tape over the label then cut the label from the label paper. Thanks. The clear spray works too but I hate the smell. I bought full sheet labels for about $10 for 25 sheets. It is actually Office Max brand Avery was about $12 bucks. Avery template 8165. I will experiment on normal paper first then print them on the full sheet which is the same thing but with a peel off back. Thanks everyone!

Hey maveric_manic,

Are you getting any of this? Two-way dialogue helps to arrive at an acceptable solution!

I looked at some of the cross-references and downloaded "Avery Wizard" from Avery and it works with Office integrated. Looks like I can make any size label by making a box and the lettering is auto centered. Then I just need some ink jet paper from Avery with one side sticky. I read this somewhere in a DIY project. Thanks for all the ideas but keep posting if you know something better. I do have a Brother P-Touch also but I would like different font, color etc. You can save your labels as a document with this wizard also.

Did you want the label surface to be plastic rather than paper? That was always a concern for me. I have solved this by spraying the printed label with clear acrylic. A caution would be to not spray too much at a time, or the solvents can make the printing ink bleed.

Good luck!

I need to go to Office Max and see what paper they have. I have done what you are suggesting a long time ago when in those days you had to cut out each letter at a time and label your hardware and spray it. Since I can save the labels in a Word document I can always fix a label that gets wet. If you rub on it with your finger the ink is dry and does not smear. They may carry protective plastic just like Brother P-Touch uses. Thanks for the advise will keep it in mind. The Avery Wizard works very good with Office and it is a free download. It is on the Avery site. You can make Logos, CD labels, Address labels as well. It integrates right in to Office.

I think you will find superior results if you use a laser printer rather than an inkjet. I've seen a Brother (HL1270, if I recall correctly) for under $100. I have three friends who are quite satisfied with them. (Usual Disclaimer).

You used to be able to buy golf ball engraving machines, but, it looks as though most of that market now is covered by customised product.

I found this golf ball printing "kit"

http://www.golfonline.co.uk/golf-ball-golf-tee-printer-p-1912.html about $25

but, it looks as though you have to pre-specify the text so that the suppliers can make a printing "mask" for you. It might be worth talking to someone like them for a special deal.

Hey OP,

Look into Zebra Printers. They have a wide variety of types of labels made from all sorts of materials. They use a heat transfer rather than a inkjet and the labels will not smear. They also make weather proof labels as well. Just google Zebra Printers.

We use one to label circuit boards and a different one to make product labels. There software uses all your standard windows fonts and you can include graphics.

Good luck!

Friends,

Three ideas that I have used for custom labels and work:

  • Any CAD type software will allow complete freedom of image content, orientation, size, etc. You can include lines, text, characters, symbols, art, etc. No word-processing or labeling software is as adaptable for this.
  • On-line you can get white adhesive-backed mylar type film in different sizes. It is suitable for laser printing and has a peel and stick type adhesive film also. Only problem is the shelf life unless you are using a lot of it. I even did entire controls drawings on an 11x17 size for posting inside control cabinets. It probably is also available in a clear formulation that you can laser print on.
  • Definitely, laser print (or custom engrave).
