3Phase to Single Phase Conversion

04/16/2010 2:23 AM

Static converter need

45KVA, input 3x415V 50Hz , out 230V single phase.

Preferably transformer than semiconductor or rotary.

Any known standard product that can fit?

Have you tried a simple 3-phase change-over switch box? You get to tap any one of the 3 phases.

Why the preference for transformers?

Several companies make the requisite equipment in power ranges greater than 100 kVA. Such equipment is used on board big luxury yachts because they often encounter dock shore power in flavors not native to the on board hotel services. The better quality brand names avoid transformers due to harmonic transients and eddy current losses.

If you have a 4 wire service, i.e. 3 phases and neutral, then any phase to neutral will give you 240V.If you don't have a 4 wire system, you can just get a 1:1 Delta to Y transformer to create a neutral.

But we will get unbalanced load.

Yes, but such is the nature of single phase loads. The only alternative is VERY expensive, i.e. use a 3 phase input to an Inverter that then gives you only a 1 phase output. But this is so unusual of a request that nobody will make it as a standard product that I am aware of, you will have to have it custom made. Either that, or but a standard 3 phase double conversion UPS and only use 1 phase from the output, at least your input current will be balanced, however you will only get 58% capacity from the UPS. How important is balancing?

We have an industrial semiconductor/transformer based solution for 60Hz. It would produce a balanced, low harmonics, and high power factor load for the 3 phase supply. We would have to adapt it for 50Hz.

The first unit would be around $30-40 thousand Cdn.

What kind of environment is it destined to?

Regards

Marco

Do you have a schematic available for such converter so i can build one by my self ?

Thanks for your idea.

Lazarus has the right idea with a product from ASEA. As for DYI . . . Good luck!

If all it takes is a schematic everyone would be doing it. To make a sucessful product that performs reliably year after year takes extensive product development experience with field installations and then some additional product revision.

GA!

This is exactly what we have been doing for the last 9 years. We are talking about many thousands hours of development and a few years of long wok days supporting early customers. Now it is becoming much easier and we are looking at diversifying the applications.

Your comment shows that you know what I am talking about. I hope that you are you are successful with your efforts.

Regards,

Marco

Marcot how about a link to your product? Be nice to see a Cdn made product.

At least to have a look at the schematic (or even block diagram)to know some idea about what is going on regarding the new technology.

Why would I disclose the fruit of my hard work to a total stranger, who, on top of it answers incognito?

If you are commercially interested in the technology, contact me. We will get to know each others and then decide if we can do business.

Posting any idea or product on the net is equivalent to giving part of it away.

Please, understand my reluctance.

Thanks for your reply, when we discuss a technical issue we do not speak in the dark and telling only stories, science and technology are for every one -we should not hide anything other wise there will be no progress around the world.

Re: 3Phase to Single Phase Conversion

Block diagrams are available from several product websites. Input conversion is switch mode section stepping up to higher voltage level to reduce heat generating current then a regulator stage and finally a stabilized second conversion to final output. This is also where phasing and clock sync can be done if it is desirable to have sigle phase output from 3 phase input. It ain't rocket science but the devil lies in the details. Details such as physical arrangement to prevent hot spots, high voltage arc-overs and immunity to resonant vibration when the product is mounted in a vessel having big diesels shaking the whole structure. If yo are serious about ro0llong your own that is enough to get you started. This is the kind of details that seperate the wanna-be boys from the serious manufacturers. Since you will not register and prefer posting anonomously it has to be assumed you have some ulterior motive in asking for design secrets.

Do not try to built something like static semiconductor converters for high power capacity.

You will never be able to by same class of components on market as specialized factories, as You will look for 12 GTO thiristors or IGBT transistors and they baying thousands in their own specs.

Load is boat with 43KVA 220V 50Hz single phase generator and all systems and equipments are for 220V/50Hz.

That is standard way for boats, as standard device for shore connection that I choose that is from ASEA marine program. Question was made as I was not so familiar with marine equipments market.

As I mentioned solution found, problem solved.

PS

each 3 phase system have single phases, but lad connected to 3p system shall be phase symmetric or local authority will disconnect you due to unbalanced load, in this case source is existing 100A 3P breaker in local SMDB

Re: 3Phase to Single Phase Conversion

Perhaps a 3 phase transformer with a zig-zag winding as input part and a star connected winding as output will help.

input 3 x 400V / output 3 x 400V Zyn

The zig-zag winding distributes the load over the 3 phases.

Between starpoint and phase on the output you will have 3 times 230V one phase.
