Wouldn't there be legal implications? Isn't sheet music copyrighted?

So, if you print your own copy of the sheet music from a recording, did you break the law?

For sure, you reverse-engineered it!

You would only have a problem if you attempted to claim it was yours and profit from having or distributing it. Musicians through the ages have learned their trade by learning to play the songs of others and even writing down the notes. No one cares until they attempt to profit from the information without compensating the owner.

I know they've had programs to do this for a long time - but this is interesting, it sounds like an improvement on the capabilities. I have never used the sheet-music software myself, so wasn't aware of the limits.

This sort of software is great for composers/songwriters who can't or don't want to sit down and pen the notes. Just play your song and let the machine transcribe it. (You need the sheet music, afaik, for copyright purposes. )

Not everyone wants to rip-off music...please. Sheet music is copywrited from copying what's already printed. Copying what someone else played is totally different. Every musician learns from what someone else did and then there are those that move on and do their own.

There are many muso's out there that cannot read music let alone write it, but play wonderfully.

Then there are those that just play by ear and compose 'on-the-fly' and they are asked to write their composition. This would be a God-send for those that don't want to waste time trying to figure out how to write something that they just played.

Let's look at this from the opposite direction:

Wouldn't it be cool to have a scheme for translating sheet music into a full sonic performance on your stereo?

Be careful what you wish for--such a system already exists--a symphony orchestra plus conductor.

That's gonna be tough to beat....

That is available, but I don't know how well it works.

I'll believe it when I hear it. A note is not is not only a note and "weighing" it can be as important as playing it. Paint by numbers for music? . To ease what? Reduce rehearsal time? Short cuts to satisfaction?

Remember, they can only do it with an instrument at a time. I'd rather play with my self and get it were I want it. If someone wants to enter my sound world and can't understand an augmented passage with out a "walking stick"? Well..................

Back to the keys or strings it is, forever and a day, Ky.
