A Good Idea Gone Awry .... X Multitudes! CR4 Overkill

04/29/2010 10:16 AM

In the emailed "Stories for ... " digest pages on the left page a "Post Question" space is provided... This is obviously an "ingenious" notion especially if it brings more new or repeat participation. However it is also a service which because it is so subject to user induced malfunction -- read as: wasted time and effort in which due to even the slightest misstep...such as touching an arrow key... the question in progress is sent into oblivion forcing sender to try to repeat what was said from memory and to rewrite the question perhaps more than once over likely leaving many (very many) questions never asked by those who prefer not to have their time wasted by unnecessary programmed conveniences-- probably does much more harm than good - causes more unnecessary effort and inconvenience than it relieves. It has the added convenience (?!) that it is the kind of unwitting error which when things go wrong the perpetrators (programmers and editors) never know ....

So if software means to prevent loss of text cannot be devised then the feature for the most part is at best unnecessary and ought to be eliminated. (I would guess that it is not used often in relative terms anyway so it's highly unlikely it would be missed.) Simply linking to an edit page (to compose post page) as is normally done should be sufficient...and that link could be made by simply entering any first character in the existing "Post Question" box. Agreed that latter idea could cause momentary startle but that would be better than startle and anger after half-developed posts are untimely/unintentionally sent and lost forever.

Could not have said it better!

The second sentence in the first paragraph is one of the longest I have ever read. Or, at least tried to read. Three times through, I think I have the idea.

I lost a good hours work the other day. I mean really, it was my fault but()*&F^*(&^U%^&%$C)(*&.K". Shocking. I went out and did a few things around the yard to get over it.

It is OK to go to a safer place to write and then copy paste but loosing any thing is so eighties. It just should not happen.

You should sign in Guest, we could do a bit of ranting together, Ky.

If I may ask your leniency--

The sentence (if we may call it that) in question might have - indeed would have - been more suitably punctuated but for the fact, that during its writing the "," (comma) key of this laptop's keyboard suddenly went limp ... as in, dead/won't click/non-functional.

Determined not to fall into a second bout of rewriting - the first having been the one that engendered this feedback thread's topic - I pressed ahead in the hope (and confidence) that astute readers, such as CR4 participants have proven themselves to be, would have skill and tenacity sufficient to perceive the missing commas with as little cranial discomfort as possible

After posting, a little tilting and blowing across of the keyboard successfullly removed whatever it was - perhaps an ant or dirt particle - that had untimely interrupted that one key.
