Guadalajara sewer explosion, 1992

03/25/2005 4:55 PM

"Seconds from Disaster" (on NGC) ran an episode recently about a devastating sewer explosion in Guadalajara in 1992. A series of explosions rocked the city and destroyed nearly 2 km of city street. 215 people were killed. The ultimate cause of the explosion: A badly engineered water pipe placed too close to a gasoline supply pipe caused a reaction called "metal to metal corrosion".
