Lemelson-MIT Excite Awards

Subject: Lemelson-MIT Excite Awards

Dear Matt,

On behalf of the Lemelson-MIT Program, we would like to congratulate you on being selected as one of this year's Excite Award recipients! This means that you are now a finalist in the InvenTeam grant application process and are invited to attend EurekaFest at MIT from June 16-19, 2010.

If you are traveling from California, New Mexico, Oregon, or Utah, you may arrive a day early (June 15) at no cost to you. Everyone must depart no later than June 20.

If you cannot attend EurekaFest due to a prior commitment, another educator who is listed on your application must attend in your place. We cannot accept final applications from teams that are not represented at EurekaFest.

We are working on a detailed schedule of EurekaFest events, and will send it to you as soon as possible.

Again, congratulations on this achievement, and we'll see you next month!

Sincerely,
Ellen Dickenson and Leigh Estabrooks
Lemelson-MIT InvenTeams

I found out about Inventeams from CR4 and asked the 4H club I lead if they would like to try for it next year. And this is the result.

Do you all think that a blog about this adventure would be of interest?

Congratulations both to your club and to you! I for one would enjoy hearing how this adventure continues. By all mean do a blog on it, and take good notes and pictures. Bon voyage!

I wish to echo Tornado: Well done, and congratulations to you and your team!

"Do you all think that a blog about this adventure would be of interest?" Does ten pounds of flour make a really big biscuit? You bet!

I am looking forward to reading more about the adventure.

Of course! I'm especially curious to know what kind of project was chosen by the 4H team. Congrat's and good luck!

For a project they chose to work on improving a Bio-Sand Filter operation by installing roughing sand filters ahead of the main Bio-Sand Filter. The roughing filters will be flood and drain design. The sand will act as an entrapment for pathogens. A bio-film should grow on the sand to help clean the water by consuming the pathogens. The flood and drain action will force all the air from the sand as the filter fills and draw air into the sand as it drains out insuring a high oxygen level.

Bio-Sand Filters are used in areas without a potable water supply to clean enough water daily for a single household.

I'm sure it will change a bit as we go along.
