Electro Mechanical Mast Working Principle

05/17/2010 2:33 AM

Hello,
I'm just curious to know the working principle behind an electro-mechanical mast. All i know is that they need an electric motor, but i cannot imagine how people are able to convert that drive to propel the telescopic mast. Hope some one can enlighten me on this principle.
Thank You.

The motor could drive a screw, of which there are a few types; or it could be a rack-and-pinion scheme; or other possibilities.

We use two types that are run by electric, gas or diesel motors/engines.

The power plant (electric or fuel) drive a hydraulic pump that actuates the hydraulic ram(s), drive (forward/reverse) and steering.

Type one is straight mast manlift. There is a multi stage hydraulic ram within the mast.

Second type is an external multi ram either straight stick or articulated mast.

Hydraulics are controlled via solenoid valves.

Solenoid valves are controlled via operator switches at the base and/or in the basket.

Electricity to control the solenoid valves comes from the battery on an electric unit or an alternator on a gas/diesel unit.
