Power Converter

05/18/2010 10:15 AM

I know you can go to Radio Shack and on-line for power converters that will allow you to use USA type of power requiring devices ( 110 VAC 60 Cycle ) in Europe ( 220 VAC 50 Cycle )

But the last time I checked all they were was drop down transformers. They still did not address the 50 vs 60 cycle situation.

But now with modern technologies out there. is there such a beast? I have a syncronous motor that wants 110 VAC and 60 cycle to run at 1 rpm. it is a timing motor and in so it uses the 60 cycle to determine the speed. 1 rpm.

But i need it to run on the power that is like in Europe 220 vac and 50 cycle. It's low power like 3 watts or so. so not a big power problem, so does anyone know of any converters that do this now?

Thanks Joe

There are ac frequency converters normally used for variable speeds ac motors. I suppose you could lock the frequency at 50 cycles, but they are pretty expensive.

Yeah, got to keep it on the cheap.

it's for the clock I make,

and a 220 v 50 cy motor is at least over here inthe states way too costly.

Do a web search for "power frequency converters". There are many out there. There are mechanical motor-generator systems, as well as electronic units. There are laboratory types as well as industrial ones.

If you want low cost and simple, you may want to use one of the cheap inverters that are out there. Couple a 12 volt inverter to a 12 volt power supply. With your power needs this may work.

Couldn't you replace the motor with a 50 Hz version?

Thats one option, But there in the states they are terribly costly. Because there is no use for them.

If i could find a reasonable priced one that would be the ultimate cure!

Did you read my previous post fully through, you might get them for nothing!!!

In the worst case scenario, other than the gearing or pulleys, you may need a 2:1 step down transformer for 230 to 110 volts......a small one will be enough as most of these synchronous motors I mentioned before, take less than 5 watts of energy.....thats a tiny transformer......

Theoretically one could even use a dropper resistor (rated at least to 5 watts, same resistance as the motor....) as the load would be constant, so even cheaper!!!! But I personally prefer transformers, they waste less energy....and isolate to a degree as well.....

If you bought something like this and added a gear correction (or use toothed belts & pulleys to divide by 5 or 6), you could set it up for any frequency......

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Microwave-Synchronous-Turn-Table-Motor-/220605338157?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Home_Garden_Kitchen_Microwaves&hash=item335d1a522d

You may even find that taking them out of scrapped microwave ovens saves you even more money!!! Like for free!!!! That will cover the cost of two pulleys and a toothed belt easily AND if you supplied two pulleys (one for 50 and one for 60Hz) you make your clock completely international, so someone moving from the USA to the UK for example, can take his clock with him, change the pulley and still have correct time!!

T5 belts are reasonably priced, very strong and will last years in such an application.....or even stronger, go for T10.....

ok here is a twist buy a small power amp "Yes an audio amp" you can find them dirt cheep measure the voltage output make sure you have enough peak to peak output. turn it all the way down input a tone "sine wave of course" into the input. with voltage meter attached turn up volume till you see you have the voltage you need. wow now you have a highly regulated power supply with a perfect sine wave. I have really done this for all my front of house equipment at a concert where I had really dirty power Kyle

Unless I missed something, it sounds like it could be nothing more than a fish tank air pump or similar. So likely no problem. I fail to understand why so many posts will include certain information, but not to say what the item is? Are there more secrets out there than we can imagine?

Fish Tank?

What are you talking about?

We are talking about USA 110 VAC 60 cyclwe 1 rpm motors and trying to make it run in Europe where they have 220 VAC and 50 cy.

fish tank?
