What Are The Deciding Criterion of Boiler Drum Size?

05/18/2010 8:29 PM

The Boiler Design and Capacity has improved tremendously and now a days a single boiler can supply steam to 1000 MW. I have come across a case for identical capacity and pressure of boilers, the Boiler Drum Sizes are different.

Now the question is WHAT ARE THE DECIDING CRITERION FOR BOILER DRUM.?

maybe the Steam Turbine attached to it (condensing/extraction) nos of stages.

Nice question I'd love to educate myself too.

  • Feedwater quality
  • Feedwater temperature
  • Blowdown setpoint
  • Fuel type(s)
  • Required steam quality
  • Installation requirements
  • Delivery requirements
  • Etc., etc

The prime reason for the major difference, will be whether the boiler is natural circulation or forced (assisted) circulation, given equivalent boiler/turbine sets and similar coal specifications. In the natural circulation boiler where there is approx a 4:1 circulation ratio it is not uncommon to have two boiler drums and these would have links on the waterside by crossover pipes. Each drum would approximate to the size of a single drum forced circulation design. The reason for two is the complications of size of manufacture/transport of a single drum.

The selection of material will influence the drum wall thickness.

Dear AussieBob,

Thanks for remarks. I meant to ask WHAT ARE THE CRITERION(S) THAT DECIDE THE BOILER DRUM SIZE or CAPACITY. In my question I have mentioned that identical capacity and pressure boilers has DIFFERENT SIZE of drums.

How to decide the size of the Drum is the question.

Thanks,

Hi dhayanandhan,

I see where you are coming from now. The prime purpose of the steam drum is the mechanical phase separation of the water and steam mixture. The efficiencies of the separator and drier elements and their physical size will affect how much "hardware" takes up space inside the drum. These and the boiler flowrate capacity will define the physical size of the drum. All conditions being similar the natural circulation boiler drum will be of greater volume than the forced circulation boiler. Once-through types are a different kettle of fish though.

What are the capacity/pressure and drum sizes for the ones you have come across?

Dear Mr.AussieBob,

Thank you for your reply and I shall provide the details of the drums where I happened to come across.

thanks,
