True possibly, but more likely, these types of displays are there for shock value and the public seems obsessed with indulging in other people's misery to the point where it is pathological.
Just pick up a People's Magazine or Enquirer if you want even more.
You have got too much time on your hands! That was a horribly depressing video; I couldn't finish it. Lots of facts about how much they weighed and even how you could still have sex at that extreme weight. Hardly anything about the "how and why" of their getting this way, or what to do about it.
Do you have a hobby? I think I have seen in some of your posts that you are out of work. That is, I believe, one of the worst things that can happen to a man. Doing something constructive with your mind, like learning something that interests you in-depth, would help. Do research over the internet. Working with your hands would help as well. Build something! Simple or more complex, it is something to keep you moving forward.
Best of wishes to you.
Mike

Despite some evident sadness here, these folks might conceivably be helped by bio-engineering considerations. My audio is dead right now, so I couldn't hear any ideas from the surgeon. I don't know what the status is these days with "stomach stapling," nor its long-term results. But if it lets the patient feel full with only a small amount of food, it ought to prevent such consumption as 30,000 calories/day.
Various sorts of cultural and psychological factors are likely to be involved, too. In some places, large size indicates wealth and success, and is thereby appealing. Past hunger may lead people to get food when the getting is easy. (I will likely see some hungry bears crossing my yard in the next few weeks.) In a culture where slimness is valued, a large person may find few social rewards, and turn to self-granted rewards such as food, drink, or drugs. This can become a vicious feedback loop.
That's just a few random ideas. Another bio-engineering idea would be if some enlarged or overactive gland is cause, in which case excising part of it might help.
It was courageous of these people to allow their images to be shown. I didn't track long enough to see if there were some success stories, but I hope so, and that helpful lessons may be learned.
