Lubrication for Heavy Equipment and Trucks

05/23/2010 9:09 AM

As we all know heavy equipments are always very dirty , and almost all the grease points are covered by dust and dirt , and its not possible to clean or wash the whole equipment before greasing , and we also know if we grease dirty grease points , it harms all the bearings , any body has any idea or suggestion ,

how we should grease these equipments , is there any quick idea to clean the each and every grease nipple before we grease .

Never mind. Use a rag. If your customers don't want to protect their equipment, good for you.

I can't believe someone would go somewhere else over a suggestion like this. It was my first solution when I read your question. If you are paid by the job and not the hour then how about just installing them and absorbing the cost. Buying in bulk makes these really cheap. On the other hand if you are paid by the hour then use a shop towel. I used to rebuild fertilizer equipment. I was paid the same if I ran a power washer, plasma cutter, welder, or rebuilt hydraulic components. Of course the decision also depends on what type of dirt needs wiped off. Soil and old grease is one thing. Wiping off limestone and cement dust is another.

I believe that is why you will always find a clean wiping cloth in every mechanics back pocket. It is not suggested to use any type cleaning solvent as this will break down the grease and dilute the grease. Normally just clean the nipple and gun tip before applying.

A quick rag wipe and then just pump enough grease into the fitting that the first dirty bit gets pushed out again with the old grease - crude and wasteful but it does work. If you're in the repair business you don't want to keep things too clean or you'll work yourself out of a job.

It sounds as though your looking for the NASA ink pen solution to something which only required a pencil. The solution you need is to use competent tradesmen who will as a matter of professional pride wipe the fittings and fixtures to inspect them more thoroughly, before greasing anything..

Don't post the same type of question twice. Read the FAQ's.
