Lightning travels 186,282 miles/second. Thunder travels 760 miles/hour.

Clouds rubbing together causes it.

If you count the number of seconds from the lightning to the thunder, and divide by five, that will tell how many miles away the lightning strike was. The closest interval I ever heard was about 0.4 seconds ≈ 0.08 miles (about a city block).

Thunder is the audio product of the rapid heating of air by the passing of large amounts of current through it.

Theoritically it is light and then sound. Sequence is

- Electrostatic charge formation.

- Stepped leader formation.

- return strike formation.

- Break down of the insulator (air)

- Super heating - giving out light.

- The shock wave (sound)
